Big law firm Partner Leaves Firm After Representing My Pillow CEO in Suit

Barnes & Thornburg is one of the top 100 law firms in the country which is why it was surprising to see this firm sign onto Mike Lindel's poorly drafted lawsuit. I know someone doing a deal with Barnes and they are a good firm. This firm fired the partner who signed the pleadings in the Lindel case

A Minneapolis-based Barnes & Thornburg partner representing My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell is “no longer with the firm,” the firm said Friday, a day after the partner put his name on a new federal lawsuit accusing voting machine vendors Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic of using the courts to stifle Lindell’s claims of election fraud.

The Am Law 100 firm said the partner didn’t receive “firm authorization” for the suit and the firm is immediately withdrawing as local counsel.

Alec Beck, who has been a labor and employment partner at the 100 firm since 2019, is working alongside a lead counsel from Houston trial law firm Daniels & Tredennick in the defamation and abuse of process suit filed Thursday in Minnesota federal court.

“Late last night, firm management became aware of the filing of the complaint, which was done without receiving firm authorization pursuant to internal firm approval procedures,” a Barnes & Thornburg spokesperson said Friday. “While the firm cannot comment substantively on pending matters, the firm is immediately taking the requisite steps to withdraw as local counsel in this matter and end the client relationship. The attorney representing the client in this matter is no longer with the firm.”

A number of top lawfirms have in effect fired trump as a client and now a top law firm is running away from My Pillow and Lindel

before filing to determine if anyone in the office may have a conflict. That's law 101. Seriously, this is really crazy stuff.

Edit: That is, every potential client. You don't necessarily file a lawsuit. The client could have a conflict with another client of the firm, etc.

Before a firm takes a client, it does a conflict check in which every attorney in the firm must disclose any conflict they may have with the potential new client's interest - whether personal or client-related.

A lawyer - a partner, no less - taking on a client and actually signing a pleading without such a check is pretty ridiculous. And for an attorney to take on so controversial a client with such a high profile without clearance from firm management is astounding.

No wonder they bounced him out of there.

Firms don't often fire partners. This is a big deal.
