More Americans identify as Democrats than Republicans by a margin that hasn't been seen in a decade, according to a report released by Gallup on Wednesday.
An average of 49% of adults age 18 and older reported Democratic Party affiliation or said they are independent with Democratic leanings throughout the first quarter of 2021, the pollster reported. The survey was conducted by phone from January-March.
In comparison, 40% of adults identified as Republican or Republican-leaning. The 9 percentage point difference is the Democrats' largest advantage since the fourth quarter of 2012, according to the report.
The remaining 11% of respondents were political independents with no partisan leanings.

(4,167 posts)Due to voter suppression laws and gerrymandering this doesnt mean much...I always said that if every eligible voter voter Republicans would never win, but instead if changing their views to attract more voters they create tactics to create less voter participation, and their 40% doesnt care as long as they win

(3,035 posts)Deck stacking is about the GOPs only viable method to retain control or at least de facto veto power to a progressive agenda and they are really honing their skills and actions in this arena.

(22,495 posts)Democrats came out and voted like never before to get Trump out I think we are going to continue to be motivated. I'm willing to work toward that end and I'm sure there will be plenty of others.
4 years of Dump, Jan 6, voter suppression and all the other horrible things they have done has really gotten me motivated to work for their demise. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

(3,855 posts)We are winning the battle for the hearts and minds of American voters. Independents see through their tactics that are attempting to suppress and disenfranchise voters. It's possible that they could even backfire against them. I think most Americans are in favor of democracy. It could wind up hurting Republicans in the polls that they are actively showing that they are against allowing more people to vote.

(32,726 posts)... but Repukes are enrolling in the Democratic Party in order to mess with our primary elections. In many states (including my state of Pennsylvania) a voter must be a member of a party in order to vote in that party's primary. However no such requirement for voting in the general elections normally held in November.
This kind of rat-fuckery has been going on for over 30 years, but it became really popular after Dubya stole the 2000 election. I think by then the Repukes realized that they have to cheat in order to win. It's been balls-out since then.

(32,789 posts)Republicans in NH voted for Bernie, same in NV. It has to be done in large enough numbers to make a difference. Yes, bernie won NH and NV, but it didnt change the final outcome.

(5,445 posts)So, combined registration/preferences does not guarantee anything in 2022, especially with voter suppression and gerrymandering. Obviously it is a net positive to have more Democrats, but some of the pre-existing Democrats (like the Democratic majority in KY) vote for R's. Likewise some R's vote for D's, so I'm more interested in seeing the generic Congressional ballot preferences.
Fortunately in the generic congressional ballot, Democrats still are leading:

(4,611 posts)Bullshit. There is almost no one nowadays who has "no partisan leanings". Some people are genuinely unaware that they are leaning in a particular direction. But I'm willing to bet at least half of those 11% are GOP-leaners who consciously refuse to admit it.
