(12,452 posts)There does seem to be a "forgetting" of WW2.
Maybe it's the fact that the survivors are now... a minimum of 76+17 years old?
My grandfather was in WW2, used to tell us stories about being in the Pacific aboard a cruiser heavily involved in the "island hopping'... was even smack dab in the middle of Leyte Gulf.
Told stories about kamikazes and pushing debris off the deck into the ocean.

(892 posts)....and the first thing he said to me this morning, after settling into his chair with a cup of tea, was, "Honey, do you know what today is?"
I knew it had something to do with WW2 but couldn't quite put my finger on it. He is a history buff and often teaches me things about weaponry, planes, etc., especially as we watch older war movies of the 40s and 50s. On Memorial Day, TCM showed some wonderful movies. I have to admit that I never liked war movies at all until my husband and I watched them together. He would often go into detail about certain battles, which would pique my interest so that I would start doing research on my own.
I would think D-Day would be mentioned on some news program today. I would be surprised--and dismayed--were it not. Movie depictions of troops landing at the Normandy beaches have always been heartbreaking for me to watch. Such a great sacrifice was paid by our brave servicemen and should never be forgotten.

(146,317 posts)So did NPR. So did my local daily newspaper, the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Since it's not a landmark anniversary, like the 75th was, I don't expect wall to wall coverage from anyone, frankly. And, unless you are watching a news channel all the time, you could have easily missed a story they did on some commemorative event on D-Day.
However, it was not forgotten by the media. I think you just missed the coverage.
