Manchin says he is 'very confident' there will be compromise on infrastructure

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Sunday said he is "very confident" that Republicans and the White House will reach an agreement on an infrastructure bill.

"There's a lot that's been done with the COVID bills that we put out that basically overlap in some areas of infrastructure, but there's a lot more that needs to be done. And I think we can come to that compromise to where we'll find a bipartisan deal. I'm very, very confident of that," Manchin told host Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday."

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), the Republican Party's leading negotiator on infrastructure, raised the GOP's current offer by $50 billion last week, after meeting one-on-one with President Biden Wednesday.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that while Biden "expressed his gratitude for her effort and goodwill" he also "indicated that the current offer did not meet his objectives to grow the economy, tackle the climate crisis, and create new jobs."

Manchin: ‘All the confidence in the world’ for bipartisan infrastructure deal

Sen. Joe Manchin on Sunday said he had “all the confidence in the world” that the White House and Senate Republicans could reach a compromise on a bipartisan infrastructure package in the coming days — despite a setback in negotiations this week between President Joe Biden and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, the GOP’s lead negotiator.

“I commend the president and Senator Capito, my colleague from West Virginia, for continuing to work hard. They’re working hard trying to find a compromise. They’ve come a long way, and they’re moving in the right direction. We have to wait and see the outcome,” Manchin (D-W.Va.) told host Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday.”

“I think we can come to that compromise to where we’ll find a bipartisan deal,” Manchin added. “I’m very confident of that.”

The remarks from Manchin — the Senate Democrat perhaps most crucial to the success of the president’s legislative agenda — came after Biden on Friday rejected a revised counteroffer from Capito, who increased Senate Republicans’ previous proposal of $257 billion in new spending by roughly $50 billion, according to the White House.

I don't know where this phantom bi-partisanship is Joe. I wish you were right but I haven't seen much from the Republicans to give me hope.

Granholm: Infrastructure plan 'has got to be done soon'

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm (D) said on Sunday that a deal on President Biden's infrastructure plan "has got to be done soon," adding that it is "perplexing" and "frustrating" that one has not been reached.

"This has got to be done soon," Granholm said on CNN's "State of the Union."

"It's just curious why there isn't more coming together," Granholm said. "The president still has hope, [Sen.] Joe Manchin [D-W.Va.] still has hope. ... But I can tell you the House will start their markup on Wednesday."

Granholm also said it is "a bit perplexing why the Republicans haven't moved further on critical pieces."

How much infrastructure was done in 2017 when the Republicans had the Whitehouse and both houses of congress?

Clock is ticking for Republicans on infrastructure, Biden officials say

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Democrats will start the process on Wednesday of preparing an infrastructure bill for a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives, with or without Republican support, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm told CNN on Sunday morning.

"The president still has hope, Joe Manchin still has hope” for crafting a bipartisan infrastructure bill with Republicans, Granholm said, referring to the Democratic West Virginia senator who is seen as a key swing vote.

"But I will tell you the House will start their markup on Wednesday," she said, referring to preparation of the legislation.

President Joe Biden will discuss deal possibilities with the main Republican negotiator on infrastructure, Senator Shelley Moore Capito, on Monday for the third time, after rejecting Republicans' latest bill offer on Friday.

Buttigieg says Biden and GOP remain far apart on infrastructure

Washington — Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Sunday there is still disagreement between President Biden and Senate Republicans on an infrastructure deal as negotiations on a plan to improve the nation's roads, bridges and ports continue.

In an interview with "Face the Nation," Buttigieg said Mr. Biden is set to speak Monday with Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, who is leading negotiations for Republicans, and the administration continues to hold discussions with members of the House and Senate about an infrastructure package.

"Lots going on right now," Buttigieg told "Face the Nation," "but still lots of daylight, honestly, between us and our Republican friends."

The White House and a group of GOP senators led by Capito have been engaged in several rounds of talks over an infrastructure plan since Mr. Biden unveiled his sweeping $2.3 trillion infrastructure and jobs plan in late March.
