A Texas bakery sparked backlash for making Pride cookies, so the internet showed up to support

A local bakery in Texas is receiving an outpouring of support after a customer canceled a large order because the bakery wished the LGBTQ community a happy Pride month.

The Lufkin, Texas-based bakery Confections posted a photo of rainbow heart cookies on Facebook on Wednesday, captioned, "More LOVE. Less hate. Happy Pride to all our LGBTQ friends! All lovers of cookies and happiness are welcome here."

The following day, the shop posted an update stating that they had lost a "significant amount of followers" because of the last post, and that one customer canceled an order of five dozen summer-themed cookies because of their support for the LGBTQ community. The order was already baked, decorated, and set for pick up the next day when the former customer canceled it.

The response to the post was overwhelming. The small bakery, which had been "struggling to stay afloat" through the last year received an outpouring of support from across the country. Their posts received tens of thousands of likes on Facebook as word spread of the backlash. In lieu of accepting donations, the owners asked supporters to donate to local animal shelters instead. The bakery also shared a photo a customer took Friday afternoon, which shows patrons lined up around the block.

According to Tyler, Texas, CBS affiliate KYTX, by Friday, Confections was inundated with messages of support from across the U.S., including from Mark Cuban's brother, Brian, who reached out to buy cookies to be donated to LGBTQ charities and other nonprofits.

"When things slow down a bit, let us know if shipping is possible. I'd like to support you," Cuban said, according KYTX. "If shipping isn't possible, I'll buy some by phone/email and you can donate my cookies to a local LGBTQ org or children's charity."

A couple years ago we lived in NYC for my job for a year. I put on the most colorful clothes I could find and off we went to the Gay Pride Parade. It was glorious, joyous and colorful. Afterwards I walked a few blocks to pick up lunch take out. At the entry was a homeless woman. I asked her if she’d like lunch she said sure. I bought the lunches and handed her hers. She said can I ask you something and I said sure. ‘Are you gay?’ I said no, but I wholeheartedly support everyone having the right to love whoever they love and we should all be treated equally . She said something like hmmm I never thought of it that way. I smiled and wished her well.

In celebration of Pride month and included some of their LABTQ employees talking about what pride means to them, why we should celebrate diversity, etc.

The comments section was shocking, talking KAF to stick to baking, that they would never use the products again, that they were sick of "woke" companies, that they were unsubscribing....

It shocked me coming from the baking community, but KAF seems undeterred.

Unfortunately I'm allergic to wheat. But WOW!

Oh, and the rainbow hearts -

I wouldn't say that the public's attention is fickle, but a sizable portion is overly excited by shiny things. In all likelihood, the customers they lost as a result of them being decent human beings are gone forever. I just hope their new supporters are equally steadfast.

What a damned shame that that kind of negativity can result from something that is really none of the troglodytes' business.
