The HillIm looking at Californias 4th District to potentially run against [Rep. Tom] McClintock (R), Milano told ITK on Tuesday.
I split my time between Truckee, Calif., and Bell Canyon, Calif., and the Republicans have basically had a strong arm there in the 4th District, the former Insatiable star said.
McClintock won reelection last year with 56 percent of the vote. Then-President Trump beat President Biden in the district by nine points.

(32,888 posts)We need air more people to stand up against the extremists in this country. They can not be allowed positions in the government simply to gridlock while they enrich themselves.

(66,446 posts)Ms. Milano, I love your political stances, and I think you're a great voice for progressive causes. But I really have had enough of celebrity candidates in public office.
I want someone who understands the nuts and bolts of governing, at a number of different levels. I want someone who started out on city council or school board. Worked their way up to mayor or county supervisor. State House or Senate. Then try for national office. But I want an office-holder with chops, not just a Star on Hollywood Boulevard.

(94,713 posts)the mechanics of legislative government can be learned.
Bringing in different perspectives (teachers, farmers, laborers) is useful in identifying the issues that need to be legislated on.
Aristus
(66,446 posts)But I don't think a prospective office holder should wait until he or she achieves national office before doing so. The mechanics of legislative government can be learned at the local level, and can be adapted for applicability on the national level. One needn't have a doctorate in civics, but one should at least know that civics is an actual thing.

(15,325 posts)She is running because of her past years of strong vocal activism against the damage to human rights & Democracy.
We need more like her. Those who are not beholden to pre-scripted campaign verbage.
Please do not lump Milano's activist creds in with the celebrity ego seekers.
She's not one of them.

(58,698 posts)but for a House seat? We could use a good progressive, regardless how new she is to governing.
Budi
(15,325 posts)She has more Political creds in the past 6 years than some who sit in the House today.
She is whip smart & totally qualfied & will be a great voice for our Democratic Party.

(58,698 posts)I have no problem with Ms Milano running. Regardless of her acting career, from what I've read and seen of her, she's a smart woman who knows a few things about how the world works and would be a good progressive.

(9,099 posts)Repeat after me:
Twitter is not a political career. It's not even activism. It's slacktivism. Posting a few sentences is not, "doing the work." If that were the case, my online postings clearly credential me for a run at the Senate.
Twitter is not anything. At least it shouldn't be.
Why do these celebrities always think they're entitled to start at some upper level? Run for school board. One of my besties just did, and she won. So proud. In five or ten years, after she's built up her community, let her run for higher office. I'd fight for her with all I've got. She an awesome person.
Twitter notes aren't close to what my friend just managed.
Do that, Alyssa. Go ahead. Impress me.

(94,713 posts)In the late 1980s, Milano contacted Ryan White, a preteen boy ostracized for having AIDS, and a fan of hers.[15][64] She attended a party for him where she sat with him for six hours making friendship bracelets.[65] They appeared together on The Phil Donahue Show, where Milano kissed White to emphasize that people do not catch the disease through casual contact.[66]
In October 2004, Milano participated in UNICEF's "Trick or Treat" campaign as the national spokesperson.[67] She raised approximately US$50,000 for South African women and children with AIDS by selling her own and schools' photo work.[68]
In support of PETA, she appeared in a 2007 advertisement for them, advocating vegetarianism, in a dress made entirely of vegetables.[69][70]
In June 2007, The Sabin Vaccine Institute, named Milano a Founding Ambassador for the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases, an alliance formed to advocate and mobilize resources in the fight to control neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), to which Milano donated US$250,000. She is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the United States of America,[71][72] Her field work for the organization has included a 2004 trip to Angola to speak with HIV-positive women and people disfigured by land mines during the country's civil war; a trip to India to meet displaced mothers living in squalor following the 2004 tsunami; and a 2010 trip to the settlement of Kolonia in western Kosovo to witness impoverished living conditions. Milano wrote on her blog that the latter trip was "the hardest experience I've had on a field visit", and described a waste dump close to the settlement where children spent time looking for metal to sell or scavenging for food.[73]
For her 37th birthday, which occurred on December 19, 2009, Milano ran an online fundraising campaign for Charity: Water. Her original goal was to raise US$25,000, but a donation from her husband put her over the US$75,000 mark on December 18. The fundraiser ran until December 26.[74] In September 2013, Milano released a parody of a celebrity sex tape on Funny or Die that drew attention to the Syrian civil war.[75][76]
In 2014, Milano, with the South Korean rescue group, CARE, and The Fuzzy Pet Foundation in Santa Monica, helped rescue a South Korean Jindo mix dog, found covered in mange, chained, and raised for dog-meat.[77][78][79]

A dog rescue.
She did celebrity stuff. Yay. And that's awesome.
Still doesn't mean she should be in Congress.
