An interview Vice President Kamala Harris became briefly tense when NBC News anchor Lester Holt pressed her about not visiting the U.S.-Mexico border as illegal migrants continue crossing over in record numbers.
"We've been to the border," Harris responded to Holt's questions at one point. When Holt specified that she hasn't been to the border in person, she answered, "And I haven't been to Europe.
I don't understand the point that you're making."
Harris sat down with Holt for the interview from Guatemala, which is part of her first international trip since taking office. Along with Guatemala, she will visit Mexico to discuss how to curb the recent influx of migrants into the United States.
In March, President Joe Biden announced that Harris would in charge of his administration's response to the situation at the U.S. southern border. Since then, she has faced criticism for not having visited the border.

VP is exactly right to focus on fixing the root causes which should have been done a long time ago. Of course Republicans hate providing foreign aid to help desperate people.

May as well ask why she didn't visit Canada.

(8,928 posts)"border channel" didn't televise her press conference today. I guess they didn't want their audience hearing policy that made sense.
I liked her comeback against Lester Holt.

(82,849 posts)The NBC Evening News carries quite a few stories and features on people of color, and I think that's Holt's influence. But NBC really seems to be playing the stooge for conservative talking points, particularly about the border. Press Secretary Psaki said today that the administration isn't interested in advice from the former guy's administration, who created this problem and dumped it on President Biden. She also noted that Republicans in Congress sat passively by while the former guy ramped up the problem, and if all they had to contribute was carping, the administration wasn't interested. If Republicans have a substantive plan to offer, Psaki said the administration would be willing to discuss it.
Holt's question to Vice President Harris was met properly: What's your point? Harris visiting the border isn't going to cure the problem or do much of anything. What she's doing now is what she's been assigned to do: Go to Central America and talk with national leaders about the corruption and oppression that's forcing so many people out of their countries.
Conservatives are always going to find something to complain about. This made-up nontroversy about visiting the border is beneath Holt, but NBC really has a suddenly-discovered interest in refugees at the border that they didn't have last year.

(1,399 posts)...that businesses cant find people to work. Which one is it, Tucker?
As for the story itself, msn is kind of showing their hand when they state that crossings are up in record numbers. They were briefly up when the 2+ year clog-up of people living in tent camps in Matamoros and other Mexican cities were processed but the numbers have dropped quite a bit since then.
Does msn feel obligated to push Fox/OANs stories with zero mention of the humanitarian aspect? Is actual journalism dead? (rhetorical question - we all know the answer).
I guess since theyre not really people (or least our kind of people) it doesnt matter than they had to live in extreme squalor for years. Nah, theyre more like leaching rodents and vermin (where have I heard that before? Sorry, let me clarify - where have I heard that before the Trump administration?)
And what the hell good is some stupid photo op going to do? Save it for when the land border re-opens to Mexican tourists who can start pumping some much-needed money back into the businesses of border towns who have been suffering for over a year.
