Why does Manchin not see that doing nothing gives R's everything they want?

They have no incentive at all to compromise with him. As long as he holds out they get to pass whatever voter suppression they want with no recourse. Why would they compromise, when they would get less to do so.

He is not being honest about his motive, maybe he is not being honest with himself

It isn't that he wants to 'compromise.' Given past & recent reporting (CNBC) we might be forgiven hlthe2b Jun 2021 #4

IOW, while he's not actively supporting the positions of the Republicans, he isn't advancing the positions of the Democrats. Same result.

It seems he's been on friendly terms with Koch Industries...to the point that he's defended them against criticisms leveled by other Democrats.

Manchin has defended the Kochs from attacks by his own party.

“People want jobs. You don’t beat up people. I mean, I don’t agree with their politics or philosophically, but, you know, they’re Americans, they’re doing — paying their taxes,” he said in response to questions about party leaders blasting the Kochs.

“They’re not breaking the law. They’re providing jobs,” he said.

for at least a fleeting thought that may well BE 'compromised.' His history with Koch Bros is at best unseemly and suspicious. At worst, well...

Some here constantly revel at the fact he has survived as a "D" in a Trump-loving state. Perhaps we need to look more closely at HOW he has managed to survive in a Trump-loving state.

I get it. Manchin has us over the barrel and heaven knows I don't want him to convert to a Republican and give the Senate over. But, the question is whether or not he intends to do so unofficially via his actions?

That he is a member of the "D" conference NOW does not remove him nor any other "D" from all inquiry, and a closer look. Supporting Dems here on DU does not mean we put blinders on and become unthinking, unquestioning sycophants.
