Republicans are not afraid of Trump, they love and support his attempt to upend democracy.
I'm not saying they were not afraid of him earlier in his term. But somewhere along the way, they saw the light. Trump has shown them the way to get and keep power forever.
Republicans think that Democrats are not "real" Americans. We are black and brown and women and gays and hippies and everything they think is wrong with our country. They do not think we should be in charge of anything, let alone the White House. They hated FDR and called him "that man in the White House" but the country was in such bad shape they didn't think they could do anything. That is until he left office and they mandated a 2 term limit.
Fast forward to the very close election of 1992 when the GOP met before Clinton was sworn into office to plan out his impeachment. It had been a close race. They thought they could do it or at least badly damage the Democrats. With Obama they decided to do what they could to make him fail. To not support anything he wanted to do to cripple another Democratic president.
Now, they are so close. They have joined Trump's cries about a stolen election to pass state laws that will make it harder for Democrats to win. Ever.
They hate us. They think "real" Americans are Republican and Democrats are commies hell bent on destroying the country. Blaming it on fear of Trump or on being blackmailed by someone or something is dangerous. It lets them off the hook. They are as bad as he is.
