Cars Don't Kill People Oh Wait Cars Do Kill People, Especially If You Make It Legal To Kill People..

https://www.wonkette.com/republicans-are-grossly-fine-with-people-using-cars-as-lethal-weapons

A 20-year-old man drove a pickup truck into a family of five waiting an intersection, killing four of them and seriously injuring the fifth. This wasn't an accident but a "planned, premeditated attack" because they were Muslim. This also didn't happen in Trump country but Ontario, Canada. Love actually isn't all around, but hate is well-traveled.

The victims were identified as Salman Afzal, 46; his wife Madiha, 44; their daughter, Yumna, 15; and a 74-year-old grandmother whose name was withheld in a statement issued by extended family. A 9-year-old boy was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

That child is going to wake up in a hospital without his family because of some racist in a pickup.

That was Sunday. On Monday, the United Mine Workers of America reported three separate incidents of vehicular assault against workers on a picket line at Warrior Met coal in Brookwood, Alabama.

"Warrior Met personnel, either management or nonunion workers, have repeatedly struck our members who were engaging in legal picket line activities, with their vehicles," UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts said today. "We have members in casts, we have members in the hospital, we have members who are concerned about their families and potential of violence against them if they come to the picket line."

Right of Way, by Angie Schmitt.

It is horrifying to see in print all the ways that the safety of pedestrians is the last thing engineers consider when designing roads, if they get any consideration at all.

And just in case you were wondering, the same sort of discrimination that applies in American society overall applies to pedestrians in traffic accident. Who's affected? Old, poor, mostly minorities. Who gets away with the killing? White folks, rich folks, and cops.

It is eye-opening, shocking, alarming, but, sadly, as I make my way through it, not at all surprising.

For example, in one town (can't remember the specifics - could be anywhere USA), there was a housing development for old people, and a park just a little ways away. The old people walk to the park. There's absolutely no traffic control or pedestrian safety measures to allow the old folks to cross the street safely to get some fresh air in the park.

A similar example. There's a reservation, and then there's a shopping plaza. Between the residential area of the reservation and the plaza is a high-speed state-run highway. No crosswalks, no traffic lights.

The "bible" of traffic safety engineering says that 93 people per hour need to cross a given street before traffic lights and cross walks are required. Or. . . five pedestrians have to be killed or injured in one year to get the same. Oh, and by the way, the committee responsible for these measures consists primarily of older white men - few women, and no one of color, and all engineers.

Oh, and speaking of old people. Crosswalk traffic lights calculate that pedestrians cross at 4' per second; old people walk at 3' per second or less.

And speaking of that traffic engineering bible, precedence is given to vehicle flow.

Read it.

And cars.

I have been hit in 93.
I was walking with my ex to our 1st anniversary of our relationship dinner date.
I was in residential psych housing.

Had no idea what my rights were after I got hit. There was no one at the hospital to help me regarding this.I was given morphine
and my legs reset. When the cop talked to me I couldn't understand what he was saying .
I have no clue what I told him.

They sent me home with significant untreated spine damage and an undiagnosed neck fracture. And I didn't know how to use crutches. At the psych housing staff ignored me when I needed help.

My ex boyfriend was so compassionate he helped me shower, get dressed, taught me how to use crutches.
Helped me cook. Helped carry my drink to the table since I couldn't hold it while I struggled with the crutches.

I had no one else in that apartment who gave a shit.

My friends would visit and they cared.

I had to re learn how to walk.
My spine looks like melted wax in MRI.
It hurts sometimes.

I have a hematoma in my thigh that now that I've lost weight that looks like a golf ball under my skin where the car made contact.

I was screwed because a cab hit me he was going 45 mph in a 20 mph road. My ex took me to where the accident happened and there was some long skids. The fucker was speeding which apparently some cab drivers do. He got away Scot free. Bastard.
Jimmy's cabs greed for profits and fear of me suing them for my injuries overrode my rights and recovery.

I hate them and will walk rather than use thier cabs. I wish they'd go bankrupt.
Or the CEO gets hit by a bus.
