(18,486 posts)Among other things, if we were a banana republic, you wouldn't know any of the facts in your list.
And even if you did, you wouldn't be able to say it freely with no fear of retribution, as you have done.

(8,333 posts)I would contend that although we are not literally dependent on bananas, if we are not there we are teetering on the edge. Most of the things that I point out were known in failing Central and South American countries, but the residents could do nothing about it. It was not that they were hidden, it was the inability to correct the problem. Hopefully, we will make the necessary corrections while we can, it will be ugly but sunlight is the only disinfectant and hopefully the independent voter will see the light. The Fox News viewer never will as Fox will not let them see.

(18,486 posts)Our system is fragile and can always fail - and the only reason it hasn't is that people didn't let it. That hasn't changed. We're not letting it fail this time, either.

(18,486 posts)As I said, we have been just a few wrong steps away from collapse since the inception of the nation.
But I respond to that fear not by complaining about how doomed we are but by working and fighting to help us stay on the right path. That's the only way democracy survives and thrives.
FoxNewsSucks
(10,434 posts)and all I would say is maybe redirect some criticism towards those working to destroy our democracy instead of those sounding an alarm, even if it's been heard before.
Because "OH SHIT LOOK AT THIS HERE!!" should not always be condemned. And certainly not more than the criminal action being called out.

(18,486 posts)the people who are causing the problem.
Wasting time and energy whining and moaning about how doomed we are is a luxury many of us can't afford.
People need to get in the fight or go sit down. But yelling at people who already understand the risk we are under and are trying to concentrate on working to improve things is neither needed nor helpful.

the united states under trump shares many characteristics with a banana republic, but until we can name the single corporation that calls the shots there is some hope that we can play one corporate behemoth against others.
