General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow many people have written to President Biden to have him fire AG Garland?
In the last week, I've seen multiple assertions that the Attorney General is "choosing" not to indict Donald Trump. That he's really "center-right". That he's actually "protecting the guilty".
Well, the Attorney General serves at the pleasure of the President. So if he's not willing to do the job, you should demand that the President replace him with someone who will.
Unless, of course, sitting at your keyboard and complaining is seen as more productive...

I also imagine he has offered suggestions about what he hoped the DOJ is investigating. You think?

I mean, how long has Garland been AG? What is he doing at the DOJ, exactly? We don't know the answer to the second question, because the DOJ isn't discussing current investigations and plans.
I think we all need a little more patience. That's what I think.

(16,786 posts)The actual crimes Trump and the Trump Org. at this level May seem enough. It will be hard to be POTUS from state prison.
I hear NY state prisons are notoriously harsh no matter who you are.

Merrick Garland has been Attorney General all of four months...and you want his head because in 16 weeks he hasn't cleaned up Trump's 4 year trail of catastrophic corruption and near destruction at every level of government...Garland has great respect for the office and the rule of law...he doesn't make the law or break the law or ignore the law..do you honestly think all of Trump's before unknown insidious garbage like spygate would have seen the light of day if Garland hadn't "signed off" on it?..and about those career prosecutors in the DOJ that did Barr's dirty work... again, do you honestly think Garland doesn't have them in his sights?...Garland is by nature a quiet methodical rule follower so please allow him to do his job...we berate the repugnant GOP screaming "cancel culture"...demanding Garland resign makes us no better...patience please....

(3,417 posts)...Biden must let Garland operate independently. There is nothing in Garlands resume to indicate that he is doing anything other than follow the law.
If you are looking for a media-driven whipsaw reaction to the disastrous last four years, you will turn that corruption into prescident. By pursuing actual crimes within the letter of the law, Garland is returning to the necessary norms of governing.
I believe that the DOJ is doing the work to hold the former administration accountable. They must "thread the needle" to act within the difficult confines of a Constitution that DOES grant certain protections to the executive branch. Garland will do that, but the cases must be "slam dunk" in order to survive challenges to a deeply partisan Supreme Court.
Asking Biden to use the DOJ as an impulsive cudgel will not meet the larger, more important goal of remaining independent from the White House.

Perhaps, just maybe, posts about or directed at other DU posters should not have a snarky tone?
