(17,182 posts)Nice thing was, they took lunch from 1:30 to 2:30 so people on their normal lunch hours weren't inconvenienced. I thought that was kinda considerate of them.

(86,647 posts)Even in rural areas I have lived in. The only closings during business hours that I know of is when the tiny PO in my town had to split the postal clerk with another community across the river in the same county. There were short hours of operation but everybody knew and worked with it.

(86,647 posts)There were enough workers to have staggered lunches so the PO didn't close for lunch.

(15,823 posts)This way theres no funny business. Nobody taking longer then they should screwing the others. Businesses shouldnt make employees worry that they might not get a lunch if busy. I feel absolute pity for the workers at your post offices.

(86,647 posts)That's how we did it at the NPS and how it was done at other agencies I have worked for. Public sector as opposed private sector workers, I have found, have a different work ethic and sense of responsibility when it comes to scheduling.
Like I said, I have never seen a PO that closed for lunch and I have lived in dozens of places from cities to small villages and have never heard of such a thing.
Pity all you like but if you asked a postal worker how they feel about it, I'd wager they aren't troubled by it at all. It's part of the job.

(2,120 posts)... and realize that I haven't even been to my local (or any other) post office in many years. But back when I did go, it seemed like it was open over lunch time, in fact, that when most people would go there. We're a small city of about 35,000.
My town PO has been doing that since I moved here more than 20 years ago.
