to give a generous interpretation of the actions of the officials. Why? Now I'm a fan of her show, but I disagree with her generosity towards reporters on this. THey are duty bound to tell the truth imo and if they have proof about something they must say so. THat former admin isn't owed any generosity and all these reporters who hem and haw are doing the country no favors. I remember all the times they offered generous words about Barr.

(13,174 posts)It is all about access. You get to keep your plush DC assignment because you get access to senior officials in the administration, you get access because you write nice stuff about them.

(58,785 posts)BUT they are rewarded for guessing, interpreting, evaluating and insinuating according to the "themes" (think influence narratives) their employers and/or the shows they're invited to talk on want pushed. Don't cooperate, you don't get invited back.
I remember a Morning Joe/daytime MSNBC regular thinking he could coax the "panel" into stopping pushing a lie about Hillary (he'd clearly gotten fed up with what he was part of). Wrong. He was blackballed that morning from the entire MSNBC lineup. Poof! Gone!

(35,454 posts)so many people were vouched for along the way, even by former prosecutors who are now talking heads. It was maddening as I remembered him as the man who let all the Iran Contra villains off the hook.

(58,785 posts)absolutely should not report what they don't know and what hasn't been established as true and approved at the editorial level.
Nor should they insinuate, even though "if it bleeds it leads" is as true as ever. That's for Faux News. The journalism's getting pretty piss-yellow, and no doubt slanted, if Nicolle feels a need to push back.

(35,454 posts)What's interesting is in the last several days (not today obviously as she makes an effort to be 'polite') is that she has done some of that. Who really blew a fuse yesterday was Claire McCaskill. Two journalist members of the panel were being 'generous' and she let loose. I will freely admit it was wonderful to hear.

And also from the anti-Democratic left, as documented attacks show clearly. Their double-teaming attacks against the Democratic Party's been SOP for years now. That "enemy of my enemy" thing. Lock 'er up!

So yeah, the media doesn't owe MF45 anything. NOT ONE SINGLE THING.

Sometimes it is an official simply floating a trial balloon. As long as it is properly reported, no big deal. But there are serious consequences when a reporter gets to cozy with a source as that can dramatically affect their career and I am thinking of Judith Miller of NYT, who saw her career take a major hit for using "generous interpretations". A good reporter will ask follow-up questions looking for holes in what they are being told. Also, the rule of once bitten, twice shy would come into place between reporter and source. The relationship is complex, in other words.
