Extreme heat in the West could break 200 records and produce temps up to 127 degrees

Extreme heat in the West could break 200 records and produce temps up to 127 degrees
About 200 million people are projected to experience temperatures over 90 degrees over the next seven days, and 40 million over 100 degrees.
June 15, 2021, 11:53 AM EDT
By Kathryn Prociv and Jeremy Lewan

Dozens of daily records were set Monday as highs soared into the 90s and hit triple digits across cities in the Western part of the country, stretching all the way north to the Canadian border.

Denver hit 101 and Montana's capital, Helena, reached a sizzling 104 degrees. Records in Salt Lake City and Billings, Montana, were broken by 5 degrees or more. Record highs are typically only broken by 1 or 2 degrees, so the fact many were obliterated by large margins speaks to the intensity of the heat that's baking that part of the country.

And there's not much relief in sight, as the extreme heat across the West will only intensify and become more widespread through the rest of the week.

About 200 million people are projected to experience temperatures over 90 degrees over the next seven days, and 40 million over 100 degrees.

More than 50 million Americans were under heat warnings and watches Tuesday as triple digits, coupled with bone-dry humidity, choke the West throughout the week. Highs could skyrocket up to 30 degrees above average in some spots, and nearly 200 daily record highs are possible by the end of the week.

He works at a large university, and frequently has lunch with the staff of the environmental studies. They tell him that things are worse than is being reported in terms of the immediate to long term damage being done.

Or, as my brother calls it, "Golfing weather." (The golf courses give reduced fees to golf in extreme heat).

I went in to the office where I'm nicely chilled.

My husband is working from home today, and we always fight over the A/C.
He can take the heat, I can't.

Anyone who questions global warming today will get a knuckle sandwich from me.

with that we had the 2nd worst air quality in the country yesterday due to the fires burning. I kept thinking maybe we were going to get rain as it was so overcast, only to find out it was the haze from the burning fires.

This time of year is when I'm glad I have a tiny house.

I've only had my SRP bill go over $200 a few times in the 11 years I've lived here. This month will probably be one of them.

I honestly don't know how people with big houses manage.

We set up a cozy sitting room in both for times of extreme temps, heat or artic blasts, which can be quickly brought to and maintained at comfort, while closing off unneeded spaces until more reasonable weather returns. And we really don't miss them.

Both of us trying to work from home put more stress on our marriage than any other time in our 24 year relationship.

I begged to come back to work and was quite frank with them that I needed to do it to save my marriage.

Other than that, we've done just fine in our tiny house.

a private office. And unlike you I was, technically, the only one working full time at home. I don't care to try to imagine both of us learning our limits. I tried hiding in what had been our bedroom sanctuary, and I did have that space alone, but a work corner there didn't work emotionally for me. I don't want to whine to someone who went through much more, but I was really, really surprised how MUCH it didn't work for me. You just don't know until it's your life.

I'm retired now, but the current sitting rooms planned to solve that problem started as my office/sitting rooms, outfitted to multifunction as needed. (He has his own private space less centrally located.) The future I imagine keeps something like that, a serene bedroom, a very functional kitchen, and a nice but not huge place to garden and relax/feed too many visitors for inside. The rest up for discussion. Or discard.

We have APS. Since it's still dry our evaporative cooler is working pretty well though which saves us some money. But when the humidity kicks in we have to switch to A/C and our bill goes way up.

I am in Phoenix and we always get this weather in June. Historically the last two weeks of June are the hottest. If people don't want to ever be around 118 temperatures then why do they live here? It is not a mystery we will get these type of temperatures this time of year. But people keep on coming and keep complaining about the weather.

Yes, it would sometimes hit the upper teens even back in the 50s and 60s, but it was unusual.
Now, it happens multiple times every summer.

It was 116 in AUGUST last year. That is not typical.

Also, it would still drop to the 50s-60s once the sun went down. Very few people ran their swamp coolers overnight.

Now, if it gets down to the 80s we're lucky.

So.....*POW*

People's memories about weather is notoriously poor.

Our temperatures don't go down as much because we have become an urban heat island. The Phoenix area is a mass of steel, concrete and asphalt which soaks in heat in the day. And then it slowly releases it after the sun goes down. That is why our lows have edged up. In the true desert it DOES get down to the 50s and 60s at night. In other places where there is not many structures it does also. For example in the Grand Canyon today it will get to 111 and drop to the 60s tonight.

Yes, high and low temperatures have gone up because of the urban heat island effect. Look at the temperatures surrounding the immediate Phoenix area. They are lower than Phoenix itself. They should be the same. The official temperature for Phoenix is taken at Sky Harbor airport which is one huge mass of heat soaked concrete.

You really think the millions of people living here have had no difference? Wow. Those millions are driving cars which are all portable furnaces giving off up to 1000 degrees and giving off heat like crazy. Millions of dryers blasting off heat. Millions of air conditioners blowing off excess heat. Do you really think that heat just vanishes?

And no I don't work for you. Go ahead and believe things are just the same as 1911. Believe what you want.

We have high ceilings and lots of south-facing windows. However, we live in a valley with something of a wind tunnel effect, so we pretty much rely on cross breezes and fans. Plus North Bay really is a dry heat, and the nights are in the 50s, so sleeping is comfy. PG&E ain't cheap. But I'm seeing the next three days in triple digits and wondering. We'll see.

We've already had two fires in the past week. One three alarm fire on the hill behind my niece and nephews' that made us nervous. Then another over the weekend just down the street from us. Some dipshit was doing weed abatement with heavy equipment. Fortunately, both were contained quickly. But it's going to be a long summer. If Napa and Sonoma thought last year was fun. All of North Bay looks like a giant tinderbox.

A quick product recommendation if I may. I got this Woozoo fan from Costco a few weeks ago. It's amazing. Very strong, but also very, very quiet. I keep it on my desk when I'm working, then take it with me in the living room in the evening for TV watching, etc. It's amazing. But do not buy it from Amazon. Costco has them for $25. Amazon is way, way, way overpriced.

Could never afford to live there, though.

Humidity is, by definition, a measure of water vapor in the air. If the air is bone dry, it’s not humid. If it’s humid, it’s damp and sticky.

So I checked weather starting Friday 102, Sat & Sun 100 and Mon 99.

Place has air conditioning but I hope electricity doesn't get turned off, if so I will go home immediately! CA has rolling black outs when too much is used.

We are probably going to be stuck in house all weekend, we were going to do a bit of hiking.
