UK reports 9,055 new cases highest daily total since February
The UK has reported its highest daily total of new coronavirus infections since February, adding to signs that a new, more infectious variant of the disease first found in India is spreading.
The government reported a further 9,055 cases today, the highest since 25 February, and up by almost a fifth compared to a day earlier.
This week, the UK delayed plans to lift most remaining Covid-19 restrictions by a month, saying the extra time would be used to speed up Britains vaccination programme - already one of the worlds furthest advanced.

(65,076 posts)I looked this up Monday.
In the US, almost 96% of vaccinations were done with Pfizer or Moderna.
In the UK, a little under 20% were from those manufacturers. The vast majority was Oxford/AZ, with the lowest being J&J/Jansen.
The early data seem to show that Pfizer & Moderna are quite effective against delta.
What all this tells me is we cannot compare the US to the UK at this point.

(65,076 posts)...are nearly identical.
If one is effective, it's highly likely the other is, as well.

Ok, I'm reading this as for breakthrough infections (fully vaxed people who still get covid), those are the percentage of people who don't require hospitalization. Is that what they mean?

(9,259 posts)efficacy in preventing serious illness (i.e. hospitalization)
efficacy in preventing moderate illness; and
efficacy in preventing symptoms
beyond that there is the question of what percentage are still contagious,
which requires testing for whether ppl are still shedding virus.

(5,857 posts)but usually serious illness indicates either organ failure, ventilator, or ICU admission. Moderate would be a hospital admission, and symptomatic would be pre-hospital symptoms.

(7,814 posts)very well be a Delta surge among the vaccinated as well but, except for breakthroughs with symptoms, we won't know about infections without symptoms...no testing for those in general.
There is much we still don't know about the Delta variant, including long covid chances. It also appears to affect the young more than the original virus, leading to more hospitalizations by younger people.
