The state Senate just passed 39 bills to "strengthen" voting rights. Unbelievable. Is this the only way Republicans can win?

(15,850 posts)A state Id is free. Would that work? DMV gives out non driving IDs. Something needs to happen to assist voters with IDs. Yes some dont have birth certificates. But what is that number? We can help those with different ways.

(2,403 posts)It is not free when you have to take time off work. Get transportation. Do the same to go get your birth certificate. It is an immense amount of work to try and get everyone an id. Not to mention not everyone wants to have their info entered into the DMV system.

(6,249 posts)Its just getting an ID. Not building an aqueduct.
Get them rides. Get them help. Theres not that many voters who dont have or cant get ID
We won WWII
We passed Civil Rights
We passed Obamacare
We can get some voters identification.

(2,403 posts)I agree and in fact this os the ground game that we need to be working on right now. It drives me crazy when people say if we dont pass SR1 that it is game over. No. We meed to be actively beating the measures that the republicans are passing to try to keep people from voting.
And then we need to make sure that we fix those issues. Hold the house. Pick up 2 more seats at least in the senate and we could change the things that are plaguing this country for a long time.

(1,924 posts)But they plan on circumventing it via the indirect initiative route. Through this process, they need to put the proposed laws up as initiated state statutes, then gather signatures for it. They need 8% of the total votes cast in the last governors race, which is about 340k if I remember correctly. If they get enough signatures, then the state legislature must pass it. The GOP control the MI legislature. If they pass it after they received it as an initiative, then it becomes law. There is no way for Whitmer to veto it.

Not enough votes to override.

(1,924 posts)The state GOP's plan is to pass these laws via indirect initiative. They already knew they had zero chance of it passing the normal way.

(36,745 posts)That one is in the state constitution now thanks to the 2018 ballot prop.

(6,249 posts)But just in case, lets make sure Democratic voters have their papers in order.
Its not rocket science.

(54,415 posts)Republicans improve their chances of winning the more they manage to suppress the rights of Democrats to vote.
Sound simple? Yes. Because it IS that simple.
Their efforts are not noted in states with small populations and few Representatives in Congress. They ARE noted in states where there are many House seats at stake, gerrymandered districts, and non-solid voting trends over the last 30 years.
If anyone finds THAT a coincidence, I have some condos in the Trump Tower in Ouagadougou to sell you.
