hours. I've had four major orthopedic surgeries and I would have said that was impossible for me. I didn't sleep much at all the first night so I no doubt was exhausted. I must have been in just the right position with the ice pack on my hip to have been that comfortable.
I had the anterior procedure and wasn't really hurting all that bad after I woke up anyway.

(15,850 posts)You will be up walking again in no time. I have a lot of neighbors whove had hip surgery. The ones that did the exercises fared extremely well. The ones that didnt are still having issues months and years later.

(13,599 posts)pretty well right up to the surgery. It was about everything else that was painful. I was still walking an hour a day and doing a lot of stretching. It's going to go pretty easy. Once I get the swelling all the way down, I'll have to force myself to be good and stay off it as much as I'm supposed to.

(14,582 posts)On my home front, here in this capitalist, profit driven health care utopia that is America, I will mention that my HMO has declared hip replacement an 'elective' surgery so they can charge higher copays! Because, hey, they CAN.

(42,337 posts)Outpatient. Walked into the surgery center at 9, walked out (on crutches) with a new hip at 3. He was off the pain meds in a few days and walking without a crutch or cane within a week.
His surgeon said 80% of total hips will be done that way within the next 5 years.
I hope your recovery is great.

(23,124 posts)A friend of the family recommended the ortho guy we got for mom specifically because that was the type of procedure he used.
Hope you do well with your recovery, seems like it's getting off to a good start.

(111,292 posts)until you have to move. Then you realize not taking pain meds sooner was a big mistake.
The worst post surgical pain is the first two days. It's not smooth sailing after that, but people start to want their brains to work right again and will stretch out the time between doses.
I'd had a couple of surgeries before I went into nursing, so I know how it goes.

(14,559 posts)My never-ending pain is gone. And with that I silently thank daily:
My Surgeon, My GP, the Home Therapist and the Site Therapist and The Medical Carrier
and Medical Group and myself for following through with the two hip replacements that
have changed my life.
Well, actually gave me my life back.
Oh, and I have openly thanked ALL of them, many times.
Five years on and I am still pain free and active.
