Manchin's voting rights bill sure looks way better than nothing.

a proposal that would make Election Day a holiday, ban gerrymandering, mandates at least 15 consecutive days of early voting and institutes a voter ID requirement that includes a utility bill as an alternative.

What is it missing?

But, I agree, it looks better than what we had a week ago.

Blocking partisan gerrymandering alone is HUGE, and would likely result in Dems keeping the house.

This is a pretty great step.

Doesn’t mean we stop working towards the other things.

Let Manchin be the hero (in his own mind) he thinks he is and when it turns out really popular for him he’ll loosen the grip the GOP has on him.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/16/manchin-proposes-compromise-on-voting-bills.html

He supports a narrower bill, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, but says he doesn't believe the filibuster rules should be changed to pass it despite opposition of most Republicans.

Manchin says he supports a change to filibuster rules to require the minority to hold the floor (keep talking), with 41 senators in the chamber.

That is HUGE, it means Republicans would have to live in DC, never leave town for recess, and rotate in 9 senators to relieve the other 41 for bathroom, meal and sleep breaks in order to block a floor vote on a bill.

8. Ballot lock box locations based on population?

Sufficient voting locations?
Shorter wait lines?
Allowing ballot gathering?
Automatic voter registration at DOT?
Making it illegal to distribute erronous voting information?
Allowing students to register and vote in college towns?
Allow any utility bill or bank statement as an voter ID alternative.

Any of those in Manchin's compromise?

As a traveler, I liked Iowa allowing early voting for 4 weeks which the Iowa GQP has shrunk to two weeks. Now, I have to plan my travel around their desire to suppress my vote.
