Senate Democrats are weighing spending as much as $6 trillion on their own infrastructure package if the chamber's bipartisan talks fail, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has repeatedly insisted that infrastructure talks are currently on two tracks: The first track is bipartisan, while the second track will include priorities that have no chance of getting GOP support. He huddled on Wednesday afternoon with Democratic members of the Budget Committee to discuss strategy, with no firm decision reached.
Senate Budget Chair Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has been pushing for an aggressive approach to the infrastructure talks and is angling to insert a large expansion of Medicare into Democrats' plan. Earlier this week, Sanders said he opposed the emerging bipartisan agreement.
The bipartisan talks could impact us, but were going to keep going, Sanders said Wednesday.

Bernie Sanders is drafting a $6 trillion infrastructure package, which Senate Democrats are considering passing without the GOP
Sen. Bernie Sanders, chair of the Senate Budget Committee, drafted a $6 trillion infrastructure package that Senate Democrats are considering approving without GOP support, per two people familiar with the matter. The sources, who described it as an early blueprint, were granted anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.
The figure mirrors the significant level of spending that President Joe Biden laid out in his annual budget last month. But the Vermont senator is pushing for aggressive federal action to overhaul the economy. Politico first reported details about the blueprint.
"We have an enormous amount of work in front of us," Sanders said on Thursday after leaving a key budget meeting with Senate Democrats on Capitol Hill. He ticked off areas for federal intervention - climate change, affordable housing and an urgency to level the playing field for average families.
"What government has been doing is worrying about the rich and the powerful and ignoring the middle class and working families," he said. "We intend to change this."

So Sanders wants to spend nearly three times as much as Biden was asking for?

Manchin is the one being unreasonable. Democrats have a chance for real, enormous, accomplishment. If Manchin's willing to squander that, how can anyone take his side?

(145,374 posts)This will become yet another sanders proposal that will not pass. We can get a reconciliation bill adopted with 50 votes plus the VP vote but I doubt that s $6.1 trillion bill has a chance

The 'bipartisan' negotiations need a stick in reserve, to keep them honest, and something with a larger tab than the original suits the purpose nicely.

(82,849 posts)Once the roads start getting fixed, the schools begin modernizing, child care is available and affordable for everyone, NOBODY's going to care that the Republicans weren't on board.
How many of your constituents want to see coverage denied for pre-existing conditions? None of them? You know how many Republicans voted for the Affordable Care Act? Zero. How many of your constituents care more about that than they care about getting treatment that's covered? Zero again!
