"Great nations don't ignore their most painful moments": Biden signs bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday

"SNIP.....

President Joe Biden on Thursday signed legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday, just two days before the occasion.

Why it matters: The holiday, which will be known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, is now the 12th federal holiday and the first one established since the creation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, memorializes when the last enslaved people in Texas learned about their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation in 1865.

* Almost the entire country — 49 states and D.C. — had already commemorated the date before it became a federal holiday.

* The Senate unanimously passed the bill on Tuesday, and the House voted 415-14 on Wednesday to approve it.

* Biden called signing the bill "an enormous, enormous honor."

I know it doesn't cost them anything, but would anyone here predict Rand Paul would vote for it? Maybe he was absent.

...them being able to point to this one thing and say “what do you mean we are racist and partisan? SEE!!!”.

At the state level, they are doing something quite different.

I still can’t imagine some of them bringing themselves to be in favor of it. What will they say to their foam-at-the-mouth racist voters?

"Great nations don't ignore their most painful moments": Biden

Yes. President Biden HAD TO SAY THAT.

This country is grateful today for this President. And thank you to VP Harris for introducing this Resolution a year ago, & for Sen Booker for his standing by her in writing the Resolution.

Well done & about time.

We are having a new national holiday celebrating a part of history they are not allowed to teach in school in some places.

How are they going to explain what this holiday is for to the children with out breaking the rules?

Humbly stated, he views the event as larger than himself. 45 would have called it the greatest holiday ever even as he signed EO's to make it irrelevant because he didn't agree with it.
