Victoria's Secret is abandoning its Angels.
The lingerie giant said on Wednesday that it was partnering with a group of inspirational women including activists and entrepreneurs to promote a new brand image and shape its turnaround.
These women, who include the Indian actor and entrepreneur Priyanka Chopra Jonas and the pro soccer player and gender-equality activist Megan Rapinoe, will become the face and voice of the brand, Victoria's Secret said.
Victoria's Secret's Angels have been synonymous with the brand since the late 1990s. These women, who have included some of the world's most famous models over the years - Gisele Bündchen, Tyra Banks, and Heidi Klum, to name a few - were the face of Victoria's Secret through its marketing campaigns and annual runway shows.

How are teenage boys supposed to get through puberty now?
I once read an interview with one of the women who described what she put herself through to get ready for a show. She started reducing what she ate three weeks ahead until the week before when she ate no solid food. Three days before she would only drink water and not even that in the last 24 hours. Post show they would all binge as they were nearly delirious from starvation and dehydration.

This change is refreshing!

(18,679 posts)Was in the interview I mentioned. At the end she was asked what advice would you give girls who worry about their appearance. Her reply was- don't worry if you don't look like us. In reality we don't look like us either.
Still it will be a better message that your value as a person is greater than what you look like in your underwear.

(12,022 posts)I used to buy practical cotton briefs there and comfy bras. Then they switched to thongs and push-up bras and I couldnt find a single thing Id want to buy there. Its as if normal working women above 40 dont exist for them, only sex kittens. They deserved to go under.
Maybe female CEOs will save it.

(9,081 posts)I mean . . . you're a lingerie company. Isn't the point of lingerie to draw the gaze of your partner? Because that stuff does not look comfortable for the day to day.
As gay guy, there are things I'll wear when sexy times are in the offing, because I know the mister likes me in them. Would I wear that stuff under my clothes into the office? No, no I would not. (I mean, I suppose some people would, if that was their kink).
I think the company has been having a ton of trouble lately (look up what's going on with them), and they're making a desperate bid to seem relevant somehow.
The whole story is weird to me. A lingerie company avoiding the male gaze. Lord. This would be like me walking into a leather shop and complaining that they don't have anything I'd like to wear to a family outing. (No, no. Different kind of outing).
Sometimes companies just go full silly with this stuff. I think it's a PR stunt. They're in deep shit over there.
I'm so glad I'm a gay man. This silliness would never, ever fly in our community. If Mr. S. started going down this road, there'd be riots on Folsom St.
And everyone would probably be wearing a harness.

(11,479 posts)Women don't fit into what they sell. I used to have their credit card and went there all the time. As I got older I just wanted comfort more. I liked their cute pink and black sweats but they stopped making them, I still have a pair I walk dog in.

(9,081 posts)And I'll be honest, I'm not sure I've ever heard of any of my female friends (Millennials) actually shop there. Diversifying a product line is a solid move. It's just this paragraph from the story slayed me.
"We are proud to bring together an unparalleled group of trailblazing partners who share a common goal to drive positive change," the company wrote in a statement on the rebrand, a clear attempt to move away from its long history of appealing to the male gaze.
But yeah, the company is in deep, deep financial shit. And one of their top executives was all up in the Epstein stuff.
So, voila! They do this.

(5,693 posts)I used to order clothes from them every season. Stylish, wearable, well made; and their jeans were the only ones that fit and were comfortable. Their lingerie was an afterthought until they came out with the more comfortable stuff.

The campaign went on to be the brands most effective in its history. Dove stuck with the theme in its marketing for years.

Sorry if this gets me banned, but I just was so turned off by the whole thing.
