Derek Chauvin, the white former Minneapolis police officer convicted in April of murdering George Floyd, faces sentencing by Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill on Friday.
Prosecutors are seeking 30 years in prison for Chauvin, who was the most experienced of several officers at the scene of the 46-year-old Black mans killing in May of 2020.
Chauvin officially faces up to 40 years in prison on a second-degree murder charge. He faces up to 25 years for a third-degree murder charge and a decade in prison for manslaughter. Prosecutors have asked for a stiffer sentence than whats recommended by the states guidelines, which are at least 12 years in prison for each murder charge and nearly four years for manslaughter, CNN reported.
Attorneys for Chauvin have asked Judge Cahill to sentence him to probation and time served. Chauvins lawyers, seeking only probation, argued Chauvin did not intend to kill Floyd and asked Cahill to consider Chauvins background, his lack of criminal history, his amenability to probation, to the unusual facts of this case, and to
Chauvin being the victim of a broken system.
