"SNIP.....
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said the state will pay off all the past-due rent that accumulated in the nations most populated state because of the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, a promise to make landlords whole while giving renters a clean slate, the Associated Press reports.
California has $5.2 billion to pay off peoples rent, money from multiple aid packages approved by Congress. That appears to be more than enough to cover all of the unpaid rent in the state.

(2,957 posts)I'd be a bit mad if I paid all my rent during this mess, and then saw a bunch of people having their rent paid off by the government.

I once got a post banned by jury because it was misinterpreted as literal.
That taught me that what may be obvious to some, can be missed by others.
Cheers.
I get your point, some will make it all about themselves. However, we dont need to grow the homeless population and we dont need landlords raising rents to cover their losses. In that regard it even helps those who did pay their rent. It really is a great idea for CA. Its also a plus because it will piss off Republicans.

(118,810 posts)their rental situation and have less resources to get a new place. Premier Mike Harris on Ontario, a neocon, reduced the social allowance for everyone in the province and it was mayhem. City social workers were forced to insist people take housing in dangerous buildings. It was awful. We will see it in red states I bet. Not good for anyone.

(8,994 posts)I know people who sold personal possessions to pay rent. Others depleted savings. Hard not to feel like no good deed goes unpunished.

(24,330 posts)I live in a senior mobile home park and although I own my trailer, I do have to pay space rent. It's about half of what a one bedroom apt. across the street would cost. But my income, which comes from Social Security and a small pension was not touched. And I did get stimulous money twice and there will be more from the state, so I'm ahead of the game. Someone else may feel differently if their situation is different from mine, but I'm okay with it.
