CORONADO, Calif. Coronado school district leaders apologized Sunday to Orange Glen High a predominately Latino school in Escondido after tortillas were hurled at the schools boys basketball team during an altercation in the aftermath of a championship game Saturday night. Coronado police said they would be investigating the incident.
Saturdays tumult unfolded after Coronado won the game, 60-57, in overtime at home. Coaching staff on both sides were squabbling when, according to video shared on social media, at least two Coronado players chucked tortillas.
We should have universal condemnation of this activity, Assembly member Lorena Gonzalez weighed in on Twitter. Parents in SD County know that racist taunts against latino athletes are too commonplace. Its time to stop it. She also called on the CIF to strip Coronado of its championship or otherwise sanction the high school.
Coronado Unified School District Superintendent Karl Mueller called the incident reprehensible and apologized to Orange Glen.

(15,950 posts)I can remember back in high school (the glorious 70's) getting a fully frozen beer can thrown at me just for walking down the road, I did not provoke the attack. It hit me on my arm and hurt like hell. Just a bunch of dumb jocks being mean and hateful.

(65,142 posts)...these students thought it was a good idea to waste FOOD by throwing it at opposing team members.
This is bad on multiple fronts!

they actually brought tortillas with them to the game, because they thought it would be funny to throw tortillas at Mexicans.
Thats wasted youth, not wasted food.
They planned on doing a bigoted thing by wasting food!
The more we discuss this the worse it looks.

(4,251 posts)Coronado boys basketball represents a predominantly white community.
Orange Glen is a predominantly Hispanic community.
Witnesses reported that Coronado's head coach cursed at the Orange Glen coach, calling them losers and telling them to get the f#@k out of there. Tortillas were thrown after the confrontation by spectators, including thrown by at least two Coronado players at the Orange Glen team.
The Coronado coach was FIRED last night at an emergency school meeting.
K&R for an important story. Just last year the community rallied with petitions & meetings to protest the teaching of racism, immigration, and cultural sensitivities in the school district, crying "education, not indoctrination".

(36,458 posts)It was all in fun at the begging, and the fans were doing the tossing. Hell, it even made the news
But these days, tortilla tossing is strictly forbidden at college events
Check the last item on this prohibited list (Every college includes tortillas these days)
