(CNN)House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to appoint a select committee to investigate the January 6 attack on the US Capitol after Senate Republicans blocked the creation of an independent commission to probe the insurrection, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
Pelosi announced Tuesday evening to the House's Steering and Policy Committee that she would create a select committee, the sources said.
The decision to appoint a select committee to investigate the attack means that House Democrats will channel their various efforts examining the events surrounding January 6 into one place. It was one of several options Pelosi had been considering after Senate Republicans filibustered legislation creating the commission that had passed in the House.
This story is breaking and will be updated.

EDIT:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will announce this week whether shell set up a select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection, following the Republican filibuster of an independent commission to do the same work.
A select committee, which would only need to pass through the House, would be staffed by lawmakers. Democrats have been lukewarm on the option, which will inevitably prompt Republican dismissal and accusations of partisanship, but have come around as its become clear that the GOP will not support any investigation.
Pelosis announcement was muddied by seemingly preemptive reports that shell announce this week that she will stand up the select committee, something she and her staff were quick to correct.
No I did not make that announcement, Pelosi said to reporters Wednesday night. Somebody put out a false report.
Clarification on tonights meeting of the Steering and Policy Committee, wrote her spokesman Drew Hammill on Twitter. Speaker Pelosi told Members she plans to announce WHETHER she will create a select committee THIS WEEK. Her preference continues to be a bipartisan commission which Senate Republicans are blocking.

(19,204 posts)Yes, when it comes to violent attempts to overthrow our country, I tend to be on the impatient side and want - at the very least - a thorough investigation before evidence is destroyed.
But that's just me. Your opinion obviously varies.

(7,447 posts)stuff takes time, regardless of how anxious you are about it. You want a thorough but super fast investigation...that's not real life, so pick one.

(2,981 posts)Rome wasn't built in a day. This a complex, dangerous situation that needs to be handled competently, thoughtfully and with great care and precision. None of us have the expertise to do what needs to be done. That's why we elect leaders we believe in and who we feel can do the job. They will make mistakes, but this is unprecedented. I'm glad they are not rushing headlong into it, but proceeding thoughtfully, carefully, and thoroughly.

So glad to hear this. Not sure why it's taken this long, but I'm not going to complain. (Because what would be the point, and I'm sure Nancy has reasons.)
Give 'em hell, Nancy.

From The Hill.
The Democrats' investigative strategy surrounding the Capitol attack of Jan. 6 was thrown into confusion on Tuesday night after party sources mistakenly reported that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was forming a select committee to probe the violent episode.
Pelosi, stepping out of her office in the Capitol, rejected that version of events out of hand.
"No, I did not make that announcement," Pelosi said. "Somebody put out a false report."

A problem with Democrats is that when they have power they dont use it. They preen and bask in its glow, but leave it unused. To paraphrase LBJ, whats the good of power if you are not going to use it?
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)First of all, we impeached dipshit over it. Then we had Honore's probe. And the FBI's all over it. And there were special hearings in Congress.
And I am not sure if we will ever know what we really want to know. Did dipshit instruct the various law enforcement agencies to slow down response assistance to the capitol police. And was there an orchestrated effort by members of Congress to give the insurrectionists a tour of the Capitol and communicate with them while this whole travesty was going on.
