Fort Hamilton High School, in Bay Ridge, had their commencement ceremony today. Treasury Secretary Yellen, who gave the (virtual) keynote address, was the valedictorian of the FHHS class of 1963. My brother and sister went to FHHS, and it did my heart good to see this NYT article today about my beloved Bay Ridge. When Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen thinks about restoring the millions of jobs lost to the pandemic and making the economy more equitable, her mind sometimes turns to a place that shaped her views: Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
The daughter of a doctor, Ms. Yellen, 74, grew up in the shadow of the Brooklyn waterfront and watched as longshoremen and laborers who were struggling with health problems and lost jobs came to her fathers office on the bottom floor of their familys brownstone. Ms. Yellen, who would sit on her stoop and listen to their stories, became interested in how economics could help.
On Wednesday, Ms. Yellen recalled those days during a virtual keynote address to new graduates of Fort Hamilton High School, where she was valedictorian of the class of 1963. It was in her old neighborhood, she said, where she learned to measure success through the lens of public service.

(53,778 posts)not so much. And ironically as it has turned out, many of the workers who were her father's clients and once strong union material (their sons and grandsons by now), have become radicalized and are now magats.
Times and circumstances change.

(22,521 posts)same for media. They also have a professional code. Having different opinions about a fact is one thing, the differences being based upon a verifiable fact. However, to make up lies is another thing. The Big Lie was not based on one shred of evidence or fact. It's not an opinion. It's a lie which should violate any code of ethics. Journalism which violates their code of ethics should not be permitted. It is part of fascism.
I realize the first amendment is used to permit its abuse. I don't agree with that stance, but I'm aware of it and don't need to have that stance defended to me.
Thanks for your reply.

(22,521 posts)I see that my reply was put onto the Yellen post, to which I had already posted a favorable reply. The post about limits to freedom of speech should have gone on another post. I can see the confusion!
