(9,899 posts)OMG.. A lot of buildings in that area seemed like modern Art Deco when my wife and I passed through once. It seems odd buildings like that would collapse.

(5,557 posts)It has been reported that they were doing roof work on the building.
Looking at aerial photos the roof was in extremely poor shape. I imagine maintenance was neglected for a while.
Construction appears to have been reinforced concrete. I can see a scenario where 'normal' cracking of concrete allows moisture intrusion to reach the rebar, possibly some salt from the nearby ocean as well. rebar corrodes. rusting iron expands, which would crack the surrounding concrete further. The additional cracking allows salt/moisture to reach new rebar - which rusts, expands, and cracks more concrete. This dominos and you end up with large areas with 'rotten' concrete and rebar.
Proper inspection and maintenance would seal these cracks and stop moisture intrusion before this can occur.
Take this scenario of degraded structural integrity and add to it the modest added load of the equipment and roofing materials for the current work.

(269,011 posts)You have to see it to believe it - the collapse on the South Tower is from the penthouse to the ground - one third of the entire structure.
This will be bad and I am not sure more of the building won't collapse. Hard to watch.
A man is saying at least 50 apartments are gone and if these owners/tenants aren't snowbirds then there will be many more fatalities.

Along the islands low western side bordering Biscayne Bay, people have come to dread full-moon high tides, when salt water seeps into storm-drain outlets and the porous limestone that provides the islands foundation, forcing water up and out into the streets and sidewalks and threatening buildings and infrastructure ...

Just beginning to see interesting stories from the area in this article and other local news sources.

She said her brother, sister-and-law and teenage niece live in a ninth-floor unit there. She was able to speak to her niece ahead of her emergency surgery at Ryder. She said the 16-year-old recalled being awoken by her mother to a shaking building, then had the sensation of the floor giving way.
She felt the building shake, said Chi, a nurse practitioner. Then everything collapsed.
