Is there a "DASH-CAM" in the motor vehicle you drive most often? And how do you feel about the use of dash-cams? Are they necessary? A novelty? An invasion of privacy? If you answered "NO" ... do you want one? Are you thinking of getting one? Or would you never have one (even if it was free and installed for you.)
The Mister and I both have dashcams in our vehicles... the plain one-camera forward-facing style. But I think it would be good to have one that recorded forward, rear, and inside.

(25,939 posts)It would be worth its weight in gold in the right situation.

(100,076 posts)Though I feel that if you are in an accident, dash cam footage could work against you as much as it could work for you.

(14,752 posts)There really isn't much chance it will be used against you. It is much more likely you will be able to use it to clear yourself in cases where you aren't at fault though.
So it depends on the kind of driver you are. Aggressive or generally a safe driver?
I have one but have never had to use it. It makes me feel like I can argue my case in a close call situation. We are a no fault state, but that only helps if you are 50% at fault or less. It's a fine line and insurance companies will take the most compelling case they find and run with it.

(12,132 posts)I occasionally enjoy watching the Youtube videos from Russian dashcams.
I have nothing against them but getting one is not on my list of wants.

(9,893 posts)I wouldn't avoid having one if I otherwise wanted a car that had it, but it would probably be turned off all the time. Just another electronic geegaw to eat up my time. YMMV

(42,862 posts)... it's permanently aimed forward (no adjusting needed) it's mostly hidden behind the rearview mirror, so I don't even think about it. And it comes on when the engine is running, and turns off when the engine is stopped.
The memory card comes out for transfer to a computer if needed. Or, there's an app that can connect by wifi (or bluetooth?) and you can download/watch clips on your smartphone.
I feel much better with it. There have been some close calls over the years.
The main reason we decided to get them in the first place is because a woman backed into me (at a light) but claimed that I rear-ended her.

(15,421 posts)You plug it in. You don't really have to maintain it, mine goes on automatically when I start the car.

(7,733 posts)Seems to be a large amount of really aggressive drivers out lately and if something happens it would be good to get it recorded.

(14,854 posts)I mounted a smartphone on my dashboard and used an app to record the drives.
That lasted maybe a month before I stopped doing it, and I soon deleted the app too.

(21,756 posts)I'd been here in Colorado a few years and was talking to some friends at work about how when I talk to friends back east I just don't have the words to describe some of the sites I see when driving. And... Well duh... All of them said get a dash cam, they are cheap and your lack of words won't matter any more.... Sheesh, lousy common sense friends.
I only have a forward facing one though I should get a rear one as well, too many tailgaters out here. Being white, I don't think I really need one inside, though I suggest one for any non-white drivers.
