"SNIP......
The White House and Pentagon intend to evacuate thousands of Afghan interpreters and their families to a third country as they await U.S. visa processing, Politico reports.
The issue of Afghan interpreters and translators has become a major sticking point in the rush to move thousands of American troops and tons of equipment out of the country by September.
The thousands of interpreters who worked side by side with U.S. troops for two decades have remained in limbo, however, leading to scrambling in Washington to find a way to protect them from the Taliban and others once U.S. forces are gone.

(24,412 posts)I can't help but wonder if it sort of undermines the idea that we're leaving Afghanistan a better place than when we found it? It doesn't belie great confidence that the Taliban won't just waltz back in and regain control once we're gone, which is why we have to take a bunch of Afghans with us when we leave.

(118,659 posts)It is not a matter of confidence. It is a matter of reality. I believe the hope is that some sort of agreement can be made for peace then. What that means for women in Afghanistan, i shudder to think.

(118,659 posts)invading it was palatable in 2001. The first reason was they harboured Osama bin Laden.
