Ratchadawan Puengprasoppon was awoken in the early hours of Saturday morning by crashing and banging. When she went to find out what had happened, she discovered an elephants head poking through her kitchen wall beside the drying rack.
The male elephant, named Boonchuay, appeared to be looking for something to eat. His trunk rummaged through the kitchen drawers, knocking pans and cooking paraphernalia to the floor. He chewed on a plastic bag as Ratchadawan, unsure what to do, filmed the episode on her phone.
Its not the first time Boonchuay, who lives in Thailands Kaeng Krachan national park, has visited Chalermkiatpattana village. They come to visit quite often. They always come when there is the local market because they can smell food, said Itthipon Thaimonkol, the parks superintendent.
Thai media reported that the same elephant had even paid a visit to Ratchadawans kitchen on one of those occasions, causing damage worth almost 50,000 baht (£1,140).

No wonder they picked the brutish elephant as their mascot,... they think they have the finesse of a delicate ballerina but in reality they come across more as a schizophrenic bulldozer that is badly in need of being tethered,.. tied down,... and chained to a humongous glacial bolder.

(20,586 posts)Years ago there was an effort to reduce the elephant population by killing the males. The young male elephants who are kicked out of the family unit once they reach a certain age grew up without older males to teach them and keep them in line. They were destroying villages and causing a lot of damage. They finally put older males into the herds of young males and they shaped up very quickly.
