22.5 is a long time, but is it long enough?

Time will only tell? If other police officers don’t learn that there are consequences and are going to be serious. The judge did what he thought was best, however it is never going to be enough for others. I say let’s take the sentence as a way to end brutality from here on. Nothing will bring George Floyd back and his message will move on, hopefully.

So Chauvin will spend 180 months behind bars and 90 on parole, unless he does something to forfeit some of that parole time.

I think it was Chauvin's attorney who mentioned in, but of the 90 people serving sentences for second degree murder and with no other prior criminal history, 60 of them received 150 months.

The judge was well aware of that when sentencing.

10 years over minimum is pretty good. Tack on some federal.

He's done.

And as a convicted felon he will not be eligible for a lot of benefits other seniors receive.
So if he is released he won't last very long.

I have no pity for him but this seems like a scenario that could come to be.

The fact that he was given almost twice the presumptive sentence underlines the seriousness of his crime. In a few years he'll be pretty much forgotten, but George Floyd won't be. What's really important is that the underlying causes of police violence against minority people be considered and addressed (call it Critical Race Theory if you want) so it doesn't keep happening. A stiff sentence for Chauvin might feel like justice but real justice would be fixing the problem.

The people saying he should have been given more or put to death or any of the other nutty shit I’ve read in the last hour have little more respect for the law than Chauvin did the day he killed George Floyd.

Good luck with that, although cops are usually more prepared for being institutionalized than most.
