How many unvaccinated Americans are willing to die easily preventable deaths from COVID-19 each day?
As the hyper-contagious and potentially more severe Delta variant becomes dominant here in the coming weeks, the 140 million eligible U.S. residents who havent been fully vaccinated yet might want to start asking themselves that question.
COVID-19 vaccines are available for everyone ages 12 and up, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky said Tuesday at a White House briefing. They are nearly 100 percent effective against severe disease and death meaning nearly every death due to COVID-19 is particularly tragic, because nearly every death, especially among adults is at this point entirely preventable.
This, of course, wasnt always the case. During the first year or so of the pandemic, more than 500,000 unvaccinated Americans died of COVID-19. None of them had the option of reducing their risk of dying of the disease to essentially zero by receiving a free shot that had already been safely administered to 178 million of their friends and neighbors.
But now unvaccinated Americans do have that option. By refusing it, they are opening the door to Delta.
And make no mistake: Delta is coming.
No Paywall so might as well read the 6 warning signs. They list examples from UK, Missouri, and Florida. Unvaccinated people and communities are not faring well.

(14,628 posts)1. The U.K. has more immunity than the U.S. Cases and hospitalizations are increasing there anyway.
2. Once Delta lands somewhere even somewhere with lots of immunity it spreads fast.
3. To stay ahead of Delta, Americas vaccination rate should be increasing. Its flatlining instead.
4. That leaves more than 100 million Americans largely defenseless against Delta and theyre concentrated in places where the virus can still spread easily.
5. Delta will hospitalize and kill unvaccinated Americans, especially in undervaccinated communities. Just look at Missouri.
6. Meanwhile, vaccination is already saving Americans from Delta.

(43,272 posts)Red states and red counties are unvaccinated to a greater degree and hospitalizations are rising faster with the Delta variant.
The Delta variant is more contagious and more lethal.
You gotta give MAGAt's HIGH points for consistency! They believe you can't do anything about guns and gun homicides, and you don't need to do anything about Covid-Delta, hospitalizations, and death rates. They either believe they are immune or God will protect them.

(153,185 posts)keep trying.....I have been successful getting four people to get vaccinated, although I admit they are not Trumpers, just the "wait and see" kind. Don't feel guilty when someone dies of Covid because you didn't give it your all to make them see the light. I did not badger these folk, but I would occasionally bring it up and get them talking about it. Yes indeed.

(30,613 posts)From the CDC's web site: "Since April 2021, there have been more than a thousand reports to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) of cases of inflammation of the heartcalled myocarditis and pericarditishappening after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination (i.e., Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna) in the United States.
These reports are rare, given the hundreds of millions of vaccine doses administered..."
Exaggeration of this issue may lead to thousands of deaths. I'm sure you don't want that on your hands. Right?

(3,488 posts)If you can't get vaccinated, wear your mask and social distance. Or just stay home.
The pandemic is over for fully vaccinated people. I'm enjoying living a normal life again mask and social distance free!

(129,413 posts)that death data will always have a reporting lag because in most if not all cases, counties and/or municipalities require a medical examiner/coroner investigation of the death to determine the actual causes, including any underlying conditions that might have contributed. This is why many assume the actual fatalities due to COVID-19 are probably much higher than the 600K just due to the fact that early on, there was little or no testing, let along any tracking mechanisms.
CDC spent last year along with WHO claiming that the virus couldn't be aerosolized despite common sense scientific phenomena regarding airborne liquids propelled by something as simple as a sneeze, and both also dismissed the existence of "asymptomatic carriers".
When one defines a virus and its subsequently-caused diseases as "novel" then it ought be taken to heart that it IS novel and is not going to behave as expected. As as a scientist myself, the problem with "science" is not so much the "facts and data" but how different people with different educational focuses and backgrounds interpret that data. It's an age-old thing with scientists and is not something that is unusual.

(6,446 posts)there's no confirmation. Just our trust in DUers.

(129,413 posts)And I also understand in the scheme of things, it's a tiny fraction of a percent compared to the totals. But sadly, if someone is the "one" who is impacted by some extreme adverse event, then it behooves not to dismiss it out of hand and allow the investigations to continue to determine a reason why. I noted other things to be aware of regarding reporting of fatalities just above, here - https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=15563721
The past 1.5 years of this pandemic have been spent adjusting and adjusting and adjusting and should continue to be open to doing so.
It has been said over and over that this virus is "novel", yet it seems few truly want to accept that it IS "novel" and has NOT followed the "traditional" behavior of viruses. Yet you have some who will insist on shoe-horning it into "expected" outcomes as long as they can until the evidence is so overwhelming as to make them look stupid.
The discussion doesn't have to delve into hysterics of "we're all fucked", but it also needs to be balanced away from the other extreme of the "it's over, we're done and cured" crowd.

(6,446 posts)so i'm still masking. But i like to have factual information, not anecdotal. I have seen the numbers for Delta.... i expect it to get much worse. But i'm inclined to look at hard data (i recognize that data takes time to catch up to trends) for my fears and hopes.
BumRushDaShow
(129,413 posts)But we know we will also see lots of anecdotal reports before they become a "trend", so am not willing to toss them out.
And yup, it's due to that lag that makes sense because there needs to be confirmations and even more so in the case of determining variants, which requires additional lab work for sequencing to get the strain info, and that also costs more $$$ than standard qualitative tests...
I did see where Israel went right back into a 1-week lockdown due to Delta and a similar situation is happening in Australia (specifically Sydney metro), which has resulted in similar temp lockdowns.
And from what I have read about Delta, the symptoms are now presenting in a manner that earlier strains didn't - "cold like" types including sneezing, etc. So given its still allergy season in parts of the country, that is concerning because it will be harder to nail down. But oddly enough, there have always been coronaviruses mixed in with rhinoviruses that could cause "the common cold", so it seems like this variant is mimicking its "common cold" cousins, but is many many times more lethal.

(18,672 posts)While our state boasts 70% vaccinated, most people are still wearing masks in enclosed spaces like grocery stores. The people wandering around the stores without masks lately have made me think, "Nah, not vaccinated." Trump-humpers tend to have a certain look and demeanor that I watch for in order to avoid them.

(22,671 posts)We can only do so much. As legal adults, we cannot prevent them from harming themselves and their loved ones, nor can vaccinated individuals be held responsible for carrying Delta asymptomatically.
After Delta, will be Echo or something, then Foxtrot or something and we'll be headed into Fall/Winter and another surge in cases for the unvaccinated.
Good luck T----sters!

These vaccines are very good and our best defense as a society against Delta and other variants. As individuals, we can still wear masks indoors and social distance. I don't trust people to be truthful about their vaccination status. Unmasked people are often unvaccinated too.

I'm not "living in fear" but I'm also not rushing to crowded events or taking my mask off in public anytime soon. I'm used to masks now. I have a lot of cool ones. It's a fashion accessory.
