Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a "little communist," and that she wasn't American because she doesn't embrace our American ways.
By Ed Scarce
The formula for a Trump rally is a simple one. Throw as much red meat as you can to Trump's rabid MAGA fans and get them hootin' and hollerin'. And that's about all there is to them. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene did that with attacks on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, calling her a "little communist," and said that she wasn't American because she doesn't embrace our American ways. She also called for impeaching President Biden, expelling Rep. Maxine Waters, and firing Dr. Anthony Fauci. All the while, pumping her fist in the air.
AOC responded to her attacks later on Twitter, writing "First of all, Im taller than her." Which is all that needs to be said for Greene's trolling.

(9,373 posts)moral ground anymore. The tit for tat makes both MTG and AOC equally childish. This is not going to end well.

(12,618 posts)works is a straight up liar or an idiot, or both. The only thing a bully understands is when you show bigger teeth than they've got.
Even if you don't agree with how AOC handled it, it's complete bullshit the height of false equivalency for you to say she's just as childish as MTG is. Stop blaming victims for fighting back. Doing so makes you a part of the problem, and it's why Republicans believe they can act the way they act with no consequences.

(12,618 posts)She's not even remotely in the same level as MTG, and you should apologize for saying so.

Stop always demanding victims of bullying conform to your demands like some kind of self-appointed guardian of an imagined higher ground.
In other words, get over yourself.
Beastly Boy
(9,373 posts)Nor am I making any demands. Except one: stop putting words into my mouth to make a point. That's not how it works.
I made a comment about one rather undignified exchange between two high-ranking officials. What made you think that there is any demand in it, or that this non-existent demand somehow involves VICTIMS of bullying (I can only assume that you found at least two victims in this two-way exchange), or how you got an impression that I have appointed myself to be guardian of anything, or that a higher moral ground is an imagined concept, is beyond me.
In other words, read my post and try harder to stick to its content.
Downtown Hound
(12,618 posts)since before she was even in congress. Have you forgotten the video of her and several of her friends harassing her office?
In the "speech" in question in which MTG calls AOC a little commie" which prompted the response we're now ranking about, she also called for AOC to be locked up, literally for no reason than having opinions she doesn't like. This is actually worse than bullying, it's fascist, thinly veiled threats of violence.
But you're going to call AOC childish and undignified for giving a slightly sparky, humorous response to it? Like I said dude, get over yourself. Stop being part of the problem, and stop bringing an Emily Post manners guide to what is and has been for awhile now a fight for the survival of our democracy. We're way past the point of trying to out-dignify the other side.
Wake up.
Beastly Boy
(9,373 posts)Ok, I will give you this: MTG has been more childish and undignified than AOC, and AOC has been less childish and undignified. Frankly, the degree of childishness doesn't concern me as much as the resulting indignity of discourse. To you, apparently, this is not a concern. To you, certain US Representatives disrespecting their high office with childish antics is not a problem, but denouncing their conduct is. To you, it's all a matter of degree: a lot of indignity is ugly, and a little indignity is sparky and witty. By analogy, you must find spitting and defecating in the Capitol unacceptable, but spitting alone to be witty (pardon the graphic example). I am not buying this kind of distinction.
BTW, shaming me (or complimenting me) will get you nowhere, so don't waste your time.
Downtown Hound
(12,618 posts)It's ridiculous that you think AOC disrespected her office. The rest of your garbage false equivalencies don't even deserve a response.
Beastly Boy
(9,373 posts)False equivalence horseshit would be something like equating criticism of childishly insulting conduct with putting our democracy in danger.
I am not aware of anyone doing that.
...Oh wait, never mind!
Downtown Hound
(12,618 posts)Remember how she encouraged violence against our elected representatives and they stormed the Capitol trying to overturn our election and wanted to kill members of congress? Any of that ring a bell? What do you think they would have done to AOC if they had caught her?
But you're going to equate AOC as being as bad as they are because she gave a snarky response? That is absolutely pathetic.
No sir, nothing of what I have said is a false equivalence. These people really are a threat to democracy, and if you think they're not, please pull your head out of your butt and wake up.
And whe you're at it, stop coming down on some of our best and brightest leaders because they quip back at them now and again. We need fighters, not people like you who value dignified behavior over all else.

(9,373 posts)What you wrote was, and I quote: "The other side is waging real war and we're fretting about being dignified. It's stupid. And it's a big part of why our democracy is in danger."

Tell me you didn't write it! Or, alternatively, tell me that "we're fretting about being dignified" is in some way equivalent to "it's a big part of our democracy being in danger. Either way, I am looking forward to a bout of hysterical laughter.
Downtown Hound
(12,618 posts)Explain.
What I'm saying, and have been saying all along, is that while you're sitting there ripping one of our best and brightest reps apart for a minor quip, their side is plotting to steal our democracy and kill us. And that type of misplaced priority on your part is only making it more dangerous.
Try again. My position has been the same in all of my posts.
Reexamine your priorities.
Beastly Boy
(9,373 posts)What you are saying now is not what you've said previously. And what you said previously was, and I quote (here's where you are supposed to pay attention): "The other side is waging real war and we're fretting about being dignified. It's stupid. And it's a big part of why our democracy is in danger."
Hell, I even gave you a link to the post I am referring to so you don't confuse it with any other posts: https://democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=15568506
This is the post where you falsely equate "fretting about being dignified" to "a big part of why our democracy is in danger".
Jeez, how many times do you expect me to "try again"?
Downtown Hound
(12,618 posts)Our democracy is in danger because there are fascists trying to take it away and people like you are more interested in tearing our own apart over some snarky words and not "taking the high ground" instead of supporting them when they fight back.
Do you need me to explain it another 50 times to you or do you get it now?
Every one of my quotes that you have presented to me echoes that same sentiment.
So yeah, try again.
Beastly Boy
(9,373 posts)Did I ever challenge your assertion that our democracy is in danger? No. Do you have any clue what I am interested in? No. Are my snarky words affect anything other than my disdain for childish behavior on the part of certain House members? No. Is there anything in this thread that I lamented other than my aforementioned disdain? No. Is valid criticism of unbecoming behavior, which BTW is directed only at one of "our own" in addition to one that is not "our own" represent danger to our democracy? Don't be ridiculous!
So why do you keep deflecting?
Perhaps it's because you got caught accusing me of something you are guilty of and I am not: using false equivalencies. And perhaps you don't quite understand what a false equivalency is.

AOC is on the front lines in the fight against fascism. She is one of the strongest voices we have for the working poor, the environment, and voting rights. She has literally put her life on the line for us, and been subjected to repeated harassment, bullying, threats of violence, and an angry, violent, homicidal mob in which she literally had to run for her life.
It is the absolute height of whiny privilege, misplaced priorities, and all around extreme, weak-minded, crybabiness for you to sit back in the comfort of your home and criticize her as undignified and childish for her clap back at MTG, a known fascist who has repeatedly made threats against her. With supporters and allies like you, who needs enemies? Try having her back and being in her corner in her fight against these fascists, instead of sitting around whining like an armchair general safe in your office while those in the trenches do the real fighting and heavy lifting.
You got that, dude? Have a nice day.

(12,618 posts)I wouldn't say it's taking it personally, but yeah, I hate that our side has so many people who fret about stupid things. The other side is waging real war and we're fretting about being dignified. It's stupid. And it's a big part of why our democracy is in danger. We waste time worrying about the wrong things.
