i worked with a man who insisted he was not a republican and he was shocked and dismayed when Romney lost and a total trumpster. every time i see him i call him a republican, because that is exactly what he is.

(63,215 posts)Every so often a so-called "small-l libertarian" pops up here on DU, claiming that the big-L Libertarianism isn't "true" libertarianism.
I say bullshit. Whatever the term might have meant in whatever ancient tome they're consulting, Libertarian today means one thing and one thing only: asshole.
You nailed it!!

If anyone else benefits from their actions, it's purely coincidental.
Libertarianism is not a REAL viable political party, it's just a collective of takers and self-absorbed assholes. They are the main takers of public money, seeing whatever they can plug into as somehow 'deserved' while programs they can't plug into are somehow a 'tax' that they must pay.
They are so into themselves, as suffering from multiple DSM-IV symptoms, that there has not bee one successful Libertarian society of any kind, whether it be country, state, commune, whatever. Libertarians all want to be the main person and not be told what to do, so eventually there will be in-fighting and faction within the group. There will always be the Top Dog and the rest have resentment.
Also, part of their clinical disorders, they must take form others, so when in that society, they try to seize power and assets from others.

I'm always saying that to my libertarian friends.

(6,833 posts)They like to think they have no connection or obligation to society other than as a host for their parasitism. Their ideal society exists only as a pool of potential applicants for their various and possibly perverse uses.

What do Libertarians call Tic Tacs?
Tics, because theyre against tacses.
A libertarian vote walks out of a bar ...
... and goes, "God, I'm wasted."
A libertarian, a vegan, and a crossfitter walk into a bar. How do you know which is which?
Don't worry, they'll fucking tell you.

(6,890 posts)anti-authoritarian. In that sense , I (and most people here) are indeed libertarians. But I advise against saying so.
if one looks at The Political Compass, and takes the survey, and keeps the printout, most people here will probably find themselves in the lower left corner (I am there at about 7-8 on both measures.) And if you look over at the lower right corner, you will see a smaller group of faces, but a true collection of assholes.
Personally, I think it's important to make the distinction between levt v right and up v down. Because at this point in time, authoritarianism is an even greater danger than far right opinions.

(16,420 posts)Economic Left/Right: -7.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.9
I don't understand why I'm so much farther to the left than I am to the bottom. I did have problems with some of the questions, where I wasn't sure if I fully agreed or disagreed, or I felt like I would agree in certain cases, but not in all cases. I kept wishing for another option like "undecided" or "neutral" or "it depends."

(2,343 posts)But I guess being a social libertarian is actually a good thing. My results:
Economic left/right: -9.0
Social libertarian/authoritarian: -6.1

(239 posts)When I was in college I was a libertarian for about 2 weeks before I really thought about the philosophy and realized how dumb and selfish it is. A libertarian acquaintance told me to listen to several recordings of some Ayn Rand talks hoping that would would strengthen my libertarian inclinations. I did and that is what truly drove me away from libertarianism. I found Ayn Rand to be a horrid, selfish heartless dirtbag and I wanted nothing to do with libertarianism after that.
Libertarians seem to believe that if you let the free market run wild and let businesses do whatever the hell they want everything will work out fine. And if roads need repairing just get your neighbors together and fix those potholes! Easy peasy. And who needs police when you can hire your own security guards or better yet just walk around armed all the time! It's basically a philosophy for idiots.
And I agree with some of the other commenters who say that libertarians are just Republicans who like to smoke weed and get laid.

(12,555 posts)I know several who voted for Jorgenson in 2020. But they were '16 Trump voters who decided at different times to not vote for him again, but still couldnt vote for Biden.
The others I know who claim to be Libertarians are really more Independent after you question them about certain things. But they dont see it that way
