You must get a trophy for winning, or coming 2nd or 3rd, but not for participating and coming in last, I do believe it sends the wrong message.

"It's not enough to show up, you need to also at least suit up" - and a participation trophy which sends that message is fine with me.
A participaton trophy for just showing up, maybe not so much.
