all the timeResidents in the Surfside, Florida, condo that partially collapsed last week had previously complained about their building shaking during the construction of a luxury building next door, CNN's Casey Tolan reported.
CNN obtained an email that Champlain Towers South resident Mara Chouela wrote to a Surfside building official in January 2019, saying she was concerned that the tower being built next door was "too close."
"We have concerns regarding the structure of our building," Chouela said.
Less than a half-hour later, a Surfside building official responded to Chouela's email, saying there was nothing he could do because the building next door was in the neighboring town of Miami Beach, CNN reported.

(9,998 posts)I'm sure Champlain Towers will do whatever it can to deflect at least some blame.
Whether the building next door was a factor, the primary factor was the ignoring of issues with their own building. That's likely why it was shaking.

(6,023 posts)Over 3 million pounds of concrete and rebar have been removed from the rubble. With that kind of weight and normal solidity, there wouldn't be any shaking due to construction nearby. That was a tell-tale sign there were serious problems with the building.

(415 posts)They'd have to be running a rock quarry next door or something for the building to shake.

Especially if a neighboring building was already compromised.
Those poor people.
