So many more.
In Charlottesville. Heather Heyer was murdered as tRumps base, white nationalists marched the streets screaming "Jews Will Not Replace Us".
Of course Jews are white but that is not important to tRumpers White Nationalists. They are not the right kind of white.

January 6th was a test and it demonstrated how easy it was. This game of theirs has been played before.
A competent, tRump-like candidate such as Tom Cotton or Josh Hawley will harvest what has been sown.
I do not want to think this but I am preparing to fight. The courts are in place, we barely won the Senate and we actually lost seats in the House. tRump did not lose votes and we were fortunate to have gained more. The rEpublican state legislatures have ensured a fascist sweep.
They are doing this right out in the open.
What you should do? Continue to pursue happiness, vote AND I hope you will learn to handle and operate a variety of firearms.
What I will do? I will continue to pursue happiness, vote and prepare for the worst. I will not be rounded up and that is certain.
Cheers anyway! Have a great summer.

(83,933 posts)We vote. We vote in every election and we don't sit one out because of hurt fee fees.. We don't hold our noses when we vote because a candidate of choice did not win. We must always look to the future and the bigger picture, IE the courts we lost in 2016 due to anger and purity voting issues. We vote for Democrats and we do it in huge numbers. We can't let black people and black women in general do all the heavy lifting.

I moved here a year after loosing my job due to age and never able to seek part time work with mom as my soul job. She hasn't stepped out of the house in two years. I have had 5 full days off in 3 plus years. We take turns with the baby monitor at night, that is the night you get no sleep. She is cognitively aware and politically correct but attached to a 25 foot oxygen tank and very unsteady on her feet. I have learned to hook up the spare tanks when the power goes out because frankly she will die without it. I think I have accomplished a lot and we have kept her safe during a pandemic.

And, yes, anti-Sematism is quite alive and well with these hate-filled, loathesome pieces of human excrement. I mean, look at the expression on this guy's face. Racism is ugly, ugly, ugly. No matter how you soft-pedal it, or try and rationalize it with bible verses and pseudo-science, it is just plain ugly.
We need to stamp it out with strong laws and policies, and we definitely DO need to teach the truth in our schools. Because not only do we need to meet white supremacy head-on, we need to meet our own 'color blindness' head on. Because people still say that - that they are 'color blind,' and as long as white people claim that, we will never really be able to tackle racism, our history of slavery and genocide in any kind of honest way.
So, let's all stop being 'color blind' and begin being conscious of the profound value of every human being, and confront the evils of our past, and get rid of the institutional racism.
Gosh, did I hear you say we need an effective 'fairness doctrine' for the twenty-first century? You bet. We need to pull the teeth of these right-wing talk radio shows by requiring each of them to present the other side in as compelling terms. We have to get rid of Citizens United, and the other supreme court rulings that equate dollars with free speech, and grant corporations personhood.
We also need to pull the fangs of Wall Street by forcing changes in corporate charters that eliminate shareholder primacy and hold the interests of workers, consumers, communities and the environment on an equal footing. We need a sane tax policy too, where the rich and corporations pay their fair share.
To my mind, racism is designed to create poverty, and poverty is the greatest violence against humanity.

(3,259 posts)Such as? White supremacy is an idea, and in a society with strong protections for freedom of expression, enacting laws against it will almost certainly not pass constitutional muster. You can't legislate away an idea any more than you can legislate away drug use. Proscribing it only makes it more attractive to a certain kind of person. You simply can't make it "illegal" to hold racist beliefs. It's already illegal to commit acts of violence, and many states have hate crime enhancements for acts of violence motivated by racism. But you can't make the ideas themselves illegal; you can't create "thought crime" laws. The First Amendment protects even odious and hateful speech, as it should.
"Gosh, did I hear you say we need an effective 'fairness doctrine' for the twenty-first century?"
This also runs into issues of freedom of expression, not to mention that the Fairness Doctrine as it existed previously governed what goes out on the airwaves, as those are owned by the people. It has no ability to moderate things like cable TV or Internet podcasts. Attempting to resurrect it will run smack into the First Amendment.
Like it or not, you can't just make laws to stifle expression and views you don't like. Attempting to do so is not going to succeed, and may well backfire. If we can do it, so can the Republicans when they're back in power. If you criminalize white supremacist ideals now, then in 10 years when the GOP is back in the driver's seat, they may well criminalize Black Lives Matter on the grounds that it's a "black supremacist" movement. You and I both know it isn't, but you and I both also know that wouldn't stop them from doing it, using your proposed laws as precedent.
PatrickforB
(14,593 posts)You brought up objections to two points, and I wanted to address those.
First, you state that white supremacy is an idea and as such, because of the First Amendment right to free speech, we cannot simply stamp it out. True. My wording on that one was a bit imperfect. I was once arguing the same point with a dear friend. It went something like this:
Me: You cannot legislate an end to racism.
D: Sure you can!
Me: (silence at first, then...) How?
D: Well, look at the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Before that, it was legal to give people of color 'tests' at the polling place, and they had to sit in the back of the bus, weren't served in many restaurants and hospitals, and had supposedly 'separate but equal' schools. The Civil Rights Act also made it illegal to discriminate against anyone for a job on the basis of race or ethnicity.
Okay, let's just take D's explanation and look at it critically. While it is true that many smaller companies do still practice discriminatory hiring, most don't, and in fact if you look at literature from SHRM, you will see all kinds of articles and classes about how to INCREASE racial and ethnic diversity in companies. According to economic developer friends, companies deciding where to move or expand now include access to a diverse labor force as one of their criteria.
And, I have not seen a 'Colored-only' or 'White-only' sign since I was a small child. Plus, when I ride the bus or light rail, people can and do sit where they want.
On the other hand, we have continued reports such as the black woman who was lowballed on a home appraisal, and got a white friend to stand in for her with a new appraiser with the 'white' appraisal (for the same house!) coming in over $100k higher. And, we definitely still have de facto segregation, particularly in some inner city schools. In my own state, we declared that desegregation was a done deal a few years ago, and ended busing. But it wasn't.
So, all that said, and doubtless you can come up with other examples, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made a broad swath of us think differently over time by simply changing behavior. And I had to admit in the context of my discussion with D that he is right. To a degree, and based on evidence, to a larger degree than not.
D is a psychologist, and when we were arguing about this very point, he said that in his practice, he does not even go to feelings or even thinking to help someone who wants help change for the better. He goes for behavior. He firmly believes (and I know not all mental health people agree) that if you change the behavior, eventually the thinking will change, and finally the feelings will change.
***
Now, to the second point - a new fairness doctrine. Back in the day, at the end of the Second World War, which my father fought in - he was definitely Antifa, and slogged through jungle in the prolonged action in the Pacific. He saw combat in the battle to retake New Guinea.
Well, when that was all over, the US Congress at the time had two fears: first that Americans would be propagandized by either a right-wing demagogue or a communist demagogue - because of the new Cold War. So they passed the Fairness Doctrine. Essentially, it required news stations to 1) be locally owned, 2) present at least a half hour of local and a half hour of national news, and 3) identify opinion pieces AS opinion, and present both sides fairly.
In 1971, though, Lewis Powell wrote his famous Manifesto at the request of the US Chamber of Commerce that lays out the whole right wing noise machine, as well as the oligarchic plan to take over the courts and so on. Much of that HAS happened because in 1987, Reagan allowed the old Fairness Doctrine to die. More recently, we had a series of Supreme Court rulings that make corporations people, and make dollars free speech. Just now, we had the ruling that makes it harder to identify the actual donors to political causes, and of course we all know what has been done by SCOTUS to gut the Voting Rights Act.
In short, we are going the wrong way quickly, unless you are a Powell Manifesto supporter, then things are great. But my point is that legislation does work. To a degree, and never how you really want it to, but it does work. It changes behavior, and with behavior, thinking eventually changes, and as that happens, eventually feelings change. But power never concedes anything without a fight, and legislation is one of our tools to fight that good fight.
Best wishes!
Jedi Guy
(3,259 posts)Generally when I see "we need legislation against racism" around here, it's usually an advocate of "hate speech" laws making the argument. I'm against such laws because I feel they strike at the very heart of the First Amendment. Either everyone has freedom of speech or no one has freedom of speech. You can't have it both ways. Today's accepted speech is tomorrow's banned speech based on the whims of those in power. Once a freedom is ceded to the government, there's generally no getting it back. The road to hell is, after all, paved with good intentions.
Insofar as "change the behavior, change the thinking" goes... I'm not so sure. There is widespread societal condemnation of racist behavior these days, but it doesn't seem as if racist behavior is on the decline. Rather the reverse. I'm unsure if that's because there are more people being racists or if it's because everyone is walking around with a camera in their pocket and is able to capture the behavior as it unfolds, or a mix of the two.
I think racism will always be with us, sadly. There are always going to be people who look down on others based on the color of their skin because it makes them feel better about themselves or their own situation. Resentment easily morphs into hatred, just takes a little push. And there are plenty of people out there willing to give that little push because it increases their own power.
The only way I could see racism disappearing is if we made contact with aliens. But if that happened, people would be lining up to hate the aliens a la District 9. Just like some people aren't happy unless they're in a towering temper, some people aren't happy unless they have someone to hate.
