Unvaccinated people are "variant factories," infectious diseases expert says.

(CNN)Unvaccinated people do more than merely risk their own health. They're also a risk to everyone if they become infected with coronavirus, infectious disease specialists say.

That's because the only source of new coronavirus variants is the body of an infected person.

"Unvaccinated people are potential variant factories," Dr. William Schaffner, a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told CNN Friday.

The current vaccines protect well against all the variants so far, but that could change at any moment. That's why doctors and public health officials want more people to get vaccinated.
What parents need to know about children and the Delta variant.

None of this is really news at this point considering that we've known all of this from the beginning, but every time I see it laid out like this I get angrier and angrier at some people's selfishness and utter disregard for themselves and others.

Globally, about 24% of people have been vaccinated - numbers in the US are too small to matter Klaralven Jul 2021 #7

We need this virus extinct. The unvaccinated will keep helping it mutate until a variant successfully overcomes the vaccines. Then we'll be right back where we started.

I can't wait for the FDA to fully approve the vaccines for all ages. Then vaccination can be made mandatory. I have floorless low regard for anyone eligible for the vaccine who deliberately doesn't get vaccinated.

Of becoming infected with the Delta variant.

My daughter went do far to try to talk my husband and me out of getting vaccinated. She gets this and possibly survive, she will never be the same. She runs a business and is the major bread winner. This would be on her for putting her young daughters in danger.

I would be devastated, but could I ever forgive her for being so foolish and rejecting medical science?

Variant occurring in the global unvaccinated population would be much larger than in the US unvaccinated.

Since we are idiots and haven't shut down all cross border travel, all the world's variants will eventually end up here.

Spread to the rest of the world. I am totally disgusted.

I have isolated myself from my loved ones for sixteen months to protect us all. Now I find out that my niece went to Vail and Vegas and her mother, who lives at my Mother's, said she'll be leaving from NV to stay there with them with only one shot and no intention to get the second one.

I am beyond angry but there's nothing I can do about it. I am open to suggestions, if anyone has any ideas, though.
