Saw a frontage road with cars parked on both sides for a long way & lots of people walking towards whater it was. Couldn't tell. I thought maybe a large company picnic or something.
On the way back, I still saw people streaming towards whatever. Several people with large shopping carts & many people coming out of firework stand.
Do these rednecks realize the "Chiiina" they detest makes fireworks?
Heartbroken for pets, wildlife, & those suffering with PTSD! 💔

(26,289 posts)I just saw Skittish Kitty racing for cover. Sophie Stinky Toes is in hiding - somewhere in the house. After last night's barrage, she stayed hidden until around 4, this morning.

(57,073 posts)But I once had a very sweet sweet Sheltie boy who would shake & jam himself between toilet & tub.
Nothing comforted him.
I lived on a river at the time & the big fireworks would literally shake the house.
I've not seen my ferals all day. Was planning canned tuna for today, but they didn't show up, which is not uncommon. I think other neighbors might feed them, too.
Stay safe & big hugs tp your fur babies.
Pressing firmly, but gently on their sides, at least for dogs, can bring comfort, much like a thunder shirt or Teme Grandin's cattle press for people with autism & cattle.
Did you see Jim's post eaier about a home made wrap to help calm dogs?
I'll post link to his post. Brb

(21,606 posts)windowsill again tonight to spot the colorful sky monsters and warn them away with growls and the feline "evil eye."
It's the noises without color displays that puzzle her. She looks in the direction of the sound, then back at me as if to ask, "Did you hear that?" I'm glad she is not afraid and impressed with her home turf protectiveness.
Used to have a lab mix when I was a teen who ran into a corner of the garage and would not come out until the sound was over. Back then, it didn't go on as long as it does today and was not as everpresent.

(21,606 posts)When she was about 5 months old, she was napping on the living room floor near the coffee table. I was trying to fix a decorative peg on the table that had come loose. Had to tap it pretty hard to get it back into place.
Kitty woke up, saw me "fighting" with the table and leaped to my aid with a vicious attack on the table at the other end.
When my Med Advantage company sent a doc to my home for a general wellness checkup, we sat at my dining table. Kitty sat on the floor next to me, watching every move of the doc. When the doc put a BP cuff on my arm and puffed it up, kitty placed herself between the doc and me and growled. Poor doc jumped backward. I had to calm and distract the cat before the doc would proceed.

(57,073 posts)Oh, gosh. I'll bet doc was shocked!

(21,606 posts)I have read about protective cats and have seen a few videos of them protecting their humans, but only once before had I experienced a cat who decided to protect me from another person.

(24,605 posts)The dog, who used to bark incessantly at fireworks, has lost most of her hearing and is now oblivious.
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)Not sure if this will work for cats, but here is link to Jim's post about home made dog wrap to reduce terror.
Also, pressing firmly, but gently on sides can reduce stress much like a thunker shirt or Temple Grandin's cattle press for to calm persons with autism.

(20,630 posts)day smoking the "Sticky Icky", as she's remained pretty oblivious to the barrage taking place outside. She pretty much has the "munchies" 24/7, furthering my suspicions...LOL!
I'm sorry your babies have to deal with that kind of trauma. People are such assholes.

(16,386 posts)People want to make big boom. That's all. And it's not just the animals, although that's bad enough, I feel for people dealing with PTSD. There also are people like me: the chronically....nervous.
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)Sorry I didn't think to list those suffering with chronic anxiety. 😞
The neighbors are really cranking up the noise. Does it make them feel important?
Jerks!
Hang in there, Laffy!

(16,386 posts)I have to hold it together for my critters. My youngest son is home and we'll probably watch something on Netflix together until most of the noise is over, surrounded by the animals.
I hope your neighbors don't keep you up all night. I also hope you don't have to work tomorrow.
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)No work either, thankfully!
Glad you are together with critters & son.
Enjoy your time together!

(21,606 posts)I can understand colorful displays in the sky, which are noisy enough. But loud booms just to make noise come across to me as expressions of aggressive antisocial feelings, getting pleasure out of disrupting other people's peace.

(63,221 posts)Kind of like open carrying an automatic rifle with you every where you go, just to intimidate people and show them how tough you are. I suppose there's a lot of overlap.

(21,606 posts)about people with car windows open, blasting music loud enough to hear several blocks away. Also, those with noisy engines who rev them constantly at intersections, and gun it on residential streets. "Notice me. See how tough I am."

(15,224 posts)Its ridiculous. Houses will burn. All so some idiot can enjoy a snap, crackle and pop.
I hope all of the people on DU who think fireworks are okay will take note of all of the death and destruction they will see tomorrow. On the roads, on the sidewalks, in the alleys, etc.
Its illegal here but theres no one to enforce it.
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)Sadly, not illegal here.
Zeitghost
(3,868 posts)When you're using bigoted racial epitaphs to denigrate people doing some completely legal in celebration of a national holiday, maybe you're the problem.
This "enter derogatory term here" will be setting off safe, sane and legal fireworks with the family tonight!

(57,073 posts)Try pressing their sides, firmly, but gently. Often reduces their anxiety, much like the Thunder Shirt, or Temple Grandin's cattle press for deescalating persons with autism (or for cattle).
Hugs to your furbies!

(57,073 posts)Looks like ace bandage, if you have one, or long, thinnish scarf would do the trick. It's the pressure on their sides.
Maybe hug them to your chest and put pressure on the other side with hand(s).

(406 posts)I don't know what is wrong with people. But I, living three blocks from the river and the "dueling barges" spewing noise and pyrotechnics, am not interested enough to even walk down the street.
However, when I had my old dog, Dobie who was a rescued stray that absolutely loved everyone, was alive, I did go to the fireworks because he was convinced they were for him. They all axed for him. I have never had another dog like that. My current rescue isn't freaked out, but doesn't like crowds in general. Dobie on the other hand loved them.
Whenever I am tempted to put all of a group into one category I think about Dobie and how absolutely unusual he was. Miss him a bunch, but I certainly won't miss this noise when it finally goes away.

Today they started setting shit off at 4 PM. It's 9:30 and they're not slowing down.
This is a poor area. These damned fools spent a fortune on this shit.
I'm glad my poor cats are gone. This is the one night I'm glad they're not here.
I fucking despise this shitty excuse for a holiday. Drunks and explosives, what could go wrong?
SheltieLover
(57,073 posts)My dog & cat don't care & I can barely hear the loud ones in house, but it's still annoying & heartbreaking for others' pets, wildlife, those with PTSD &/or anxiety.
Fools wasting all that $!
Why can't they be satisfied with municipal displays?

Most of them here come from Mexico. (Edit: the fireworks. The twits are home grown)
