It's always something for which there is no evidence of any kind, and always conforms to the speaker's own wishes.

(26,289 posts)One has to do with Moses calling the plagues on Egypt (locusts, water turning into blood, and the deaths of first born sons) to pressure the pharaoh to release the Israelites. (Old Testament)
The other has to do with King Herod trying to insure the death of the Messiah. (New Testament)

(2,542 posts)It's been a while since my time in catholic school. Not long enough to get past the nuns beating me for having a sense of humor (and being a lefty) but it's been a while.

(26,289 posts)My mom was a leftie who was forced, by nuns, into being right handed. She trained me in the same direction so the things I've been 'taught' to do right handed - writing, for example - stuck. The things I taught myself I tend to do left handed. For example, my computer mouse/touch pad is always set for left handed and I can't comfortably steer a car using my right hand. So, both lobes of my brain get quite a work out.
And don't get me started on those nuns!!

(2,542 posts)All gross motor skills (sports mostly) are done right-handed. All fine motor skills are done left-handed - this includes things like brushing my teeth, eating, and writing.
What's funny is that I'm left eye dominant and shoot a rifle left-handed but I shoot a bow right-handed.
I've played golf with work colleagues who only see me as a lefty. I show up at the course and it take 3-4 holes but someone always pipes up with - I thought you were left-handed?
I think it makes you better at problem solving.

(8,401 posts)The "year of our Lord" is merely the English translation of the Latin anno domini, or "A.D." It was the standard date convention of the day. It's a mistake to read anything more into it than that.

(8,401 posts)Washington, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe were all Deists, who believed that a supreme being created the world, and then withdrew from it and allowed it to run according to the laws that being had ordained. But given that they were also Virginians, and the Church of England was the established church in that colony, prior to the revoluition they would have been nominal Anglicans, but that doesn't necessarily mean they accepted Anglican dogma for themselves. Jesus was largely irrelevant in the scheme of Deism. They accepted terms like A.D. because Christians were indeed dominant, and they had no interest in trying to convert anyone away from it.
Of George Washington, Jefferson once observed that George Washington "has divines constantly about him because he thinks it right to keep up appearances but is an unbeliever. According to biographer Steven Waldman, Madison's view was that Washington was spiritual but not interested in the theological particulars of the Christian faith. Jefferson and Adams both seemed to have viewed Jesus more as a great ethical and moral teacher rather than their personal "Lord."

(36,747 posts)Its state sanctioned religion.
They didnt put it on coins until 1864 and on currency until 1957.
We got along without it just fine up until the those years.
Also remove the reference from the pledge of allegiance.
It was not put into it until the 1950s as well.
