Rep. from Massachusetts is a "keeper" and if I live long enough, I think I will see him as a national leader of our party and nation.

(9,581 posts)the test of time. I liked Beto, too, and still do. It did bug me that he had such a foul mouth as a candidate for president.

(2,068 posts)He won the Dem primary in a very liberal district despite being the least progressive of the 5 or so candidates, getting around 20% of the vote. The others split the vote, he got the nomination, and was a shoo-in to be elected. He was a city councilor in the suburb of Newton before going to DC, with no state-wide or national political experience.
And apart from the Kennedy/Auchincloss link on his dad's side, his mom is CEO of a major Boston hospital (Dana Farber Cancer Institute) and loaned him several hundred thousand dollars to get his campaign going. It's no coincidence that he didn't support lowering drug prices, and etc.: https://www.commondreams.org/news/2021/05/25/auchincloss-shill-democrat-excoriated-siding-big-pharma-against-lower-drug-prices

Not forming an opinion of him yet. I'm too influenced by his 2013-14 affiliation.

(56 posts)Please let folks know that you won Joe Kennedy's seat in a special election for congress less than a year ago with only about 22% of the vote. Given the many progressive stars in the House and Senate from MA, there is a fairly stark difference between them and him in my opinion. I wonder how many of Jake's voters mistook him for his dad, a long-time pol.
Just based on the number of folks who signed up for that race, I will guess that he will encounter a strong primary challenge next time around. Without any inside information I'm guessing that Jesse Mermell, who came in only a point or two behind him, will beat him next time if there aren't nine freakin' candidates in the primary again.

(83,815 posts)I did my research before I voted...only to find out he was an I before he was an R. He switched to R to work on Gov Charlie Baker-R reelection bid. He voted for him, then back to D. He is 33 years old and has flipped parties 3 times.
I voted for Jesse Mermell in the primary. I only voted for him in the general.
I also am upset with Joe for leaving his seat wide open to primary a very popular sitting Senator. Both of which I had voted for. You have to know the dynamics in MA before you judge our comments. We lost a very blue seat to a candidate that has joined not one but 3 parties and voted/ worked hard to elect our GOP Gov.
If Jesse Mermell runs again, she has my vote.

I have only seen him on TV 2 or 3 time and he DID make a very good impression, but I will now take a "wait and see" approach.
Thanks for your knowledgable assessment.

(83,815 posts)I have not watched him on TV. Don't want him in that seat.
This was a special election so I believe he goes back on the ballot in 2022. I hope Jesse is the one that runs against him.

I have to agree about Joe Kennedy. It was a very bad decision on his part and not really understandable. What was he thinking?

(83,815 posts)In his own very blue district he lost by a landslide to Senator Markey. I have no idea what he was thinking. Very bad decision and for now, he is out of politics. He is young and has time to learn.
