(5,936 posts)This planet has gone loco. Why have a frivolous athletic contest when it's sure to have a viral death count? You're essentially creating an attractive nuisance that will lead to covid19 spread.

(18,402 posts)So no, its not a big spreader event. And despite the very slow rollout of the vaccine there, the cases and deaths have been fairly low for a country of 125 million people .... a cumulative number of 822,594 confirmed cases and 14,905 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

On Edit: also, after being tested, no athlete is permitted outside the Olympic Village

(5,936 posts)Despite the lack of spectators, there will be a lot of athletes, coaches, trainers, assistants, catering, judges, etc. etc. etc. It takes a lot of people to stage an athletic festival of that size.

(18,402 posts)Where there are thousands of fans, all over the country, in addition to staff, coaches, managers, tv and grounds crews. Every day, in every major city.
Here, we are still have 32,000 cases for today, while Japan has 1,500. One would expect that a country with half the US population would have half the cases, or 16,000. They have 10 times less than us still.

(5,936 posts)It's not a Japan only event. Unconscionable to hold them in the middle of a pandemic. It's all about the money of course, so what if there's a body count.

(25,861 posts)This has huge potential to be a superspreader event, even without anyone in the stands. There will be some 11,000 athletes, and many more officials and judges and so on.
