So, I play bridge with a Trumper

one out of about 15-20 of us. Today we are talking vaccines and I say "it's only the reppublicans at this point who won't get the vaccine". Then I realize she's right there so I say "did you get your vaccine" and she said "yes" looking at me like "of course".

I say then why are all the republicans refusing to get vaccinated?" She replied "Darwin was right. Survival of the fittest." Which of course is what I have said, or at least thought, many times.

I'm wondering if there might be a mild split happening in the Trump camp. She was disgusted by how stupid the anti-vaxxers are while admitting they are all Republicans.

The op said their friend voted for Trump. There was no mention of their opinion on the, insurrection, the Big Lie, or anything else. If anything, the fact that they got vaccinated is evidence that they are not in lockstep with Trump on absolutely everything.

I'd rather play bridge than talk politics with a Trumper.

She's the best player in the group. And if you play any kind of competitive game you know why I look up to her. She became disabled not long after graduating from Med school and I think her life is quite limited.

What I hope to get out of it is that she will say she knows a 3rd generation godless commie pinko who doesn't eat babies. Then my work will be done.

I don't actually partner with them, but we are actually
friends and get along great.

I just keep my bridge life strictly for fun, not
politics or religion.

It's going very well, btw! Just won a NAP qualifier,
getting ready for nationals here in Austin later
this year.

because some of her instincts are right and she's not a total fool.

I tolerate a lot of GOPs who are like that. I won't talk politics with 'em, but anything else is just fine.

They're not the enemy any more than we're their enemy. Their rotten leadership is to blame with that, pretty much starting with Gingrich and his tribalism.

Of course, the ones who go out of their way to be assholes will be told to bugger off.

I live in a red area of a blue state. I have a truce with some of my neighbors. We still have to help each other out at times. We cannot get through hard winters, illnesses and losses without each other. And sometimes it is nice simply to see another human being.

... to their friends and fellow wingnuts.

Your bridge friend had no reason to lie because she was surrounded by other vaccinated people, presumably Democrats and/or liberals. In a different group she might have given a different answer.

Beat me to it. Darwin fought against the idea of "survival of the fittest" it was a bastardization of his work.

13. Darwin never said, "survival of the fittest".
Tue Jul 13, 2021, 10:16 PM

Natural selection is a disinterested natural process by which those with advantageous traits are more likely to have offspring and pass the advantageous traits on to viable offspring. Something that is advantageous, may become disadvantageous if there is a change in the environment. It isn't about fittest. It is about having the traits that are best suited to the environment.

"Survival of the fittest" was coined by the racist idiot Herbert Spencer and his ilk who thought that the "best" type of human (White Christians) would out compete inferior stock. They also objected to ANY social welfare to aimed to help that "inferior stock" to survive. They tried to apply Darwinian principles to human beings, something that Charles was completely against, understanding that humans evolved to be a social species which had the best chances of survival when we work together with compassion.

Conservatives certainly accept Spencer's social evolution ideas more than the Theory of Evolution and any of Darwin's work.
