Covid infection only proves fatal in - what, maybe 2% of cases? Not enough to flip elections in the deep-red states and districts where the right-wing anti-vax message is being taken as gospel. But if the pandemic is resurgent, then the hardships - the economic disruption, the job losses, the school and business closings - will be felt by everyone, everywhere.

I think the GOP is calculating that a suffering electorate means GOP victory in 2022 and 2024, and if a small percentage of their base has to die to achieve that victory, then so be it. No battle is ever won without casualties. They need the "18 months of chaos" that's being called for by Republicans like Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) (https://www.businessinsider.com/video-gop-congressman-chip-roy-18-months-chaos-block-democrats-2021-7)

I would further speculate that most or all of the right-wing politicians and pundits preaching the anti-vax message got themselves vaccinated at the very earliest opportunity, leveraging their power and position to elbow their way ahead of the elderly people waiting in line.

.... bad economy In those districts because of covid or a slowdown of the economy they think they win because they will just say it was Biden's fault.

I hate to say it but the Republicans are keen at 24/7 365 campaigning

1) With the combination of their minions refusing to get vaccinated and the new Delta variant, a new swath of people will die. They will reflexively blame Biden for the deaths and the various closings of states with negative impacts on economies that will affect the national economy.

2) If Biden issues an EO or the democratic governors issue a mandate for vaccines, that will be criticized as an attack on personal freedoms NOT to be vaccinated.

LOSE/LOSE.

So that private sector employers can start requiring getting shots.
Then the loons can get their asses handed to them for not adhering to the will of the Invisible Hand.

And THAT should cause enough cognitive dissonance to get us through election season.

The states that are in trouble, (FL, AR, MO, TX) have governors and citizens who simply don't care how bad it gets. During the height of the deaths (4500 a day) they were fighting against mask mandates and capacity limits. The GOP doesn't have a strategy save for following Trump, and they think this is following Trump. They're going to try to blame it on Biden, but no one will fall for that.

And there are absolutely going to be factors for them, they're killing their own voters. There are a lot of close elections in the states, 10,000 votes can make the difference. Right now virtually all of the dead and dying are Trump supporters.

Not completely true. There is a VERY high percentage of African Americans who are refusing to get vaccinated here in north Florida and south Georgia. We have a huge rural black population here. We have ads everywhere pleading for folks to get vaccinated. There is no county in the area with more than 50% of the total population vaccinated. Some are in the 20-30% range.
