Of course, that doesnt mean that scientists havent tried, and a study published in June in the journal PNAS proposes a new and surprisingly simple test to gauge this ability.
It only takes a few minutes and involves thinking of 10 nouns that are unrelated to one another and as far apart in meaning as possible. Your score reveals how creative you are, said Jay Olson, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, who came up with the concept and is one of the study authors.
The task can be objectively and automatically scored, meaning that it does not need people to subjectively score the responses, he said. It is also faster to complete than most other creativity measures; many people complete it in under two minutes.

"Presence" is a noun.
"Love" is a noun.
"Quanta" is a noun.
There are many nouns like that; things you can't really touch.

(22,156 posts)But it is fun to do tests like this occasionally, and compare results w/ friends etc. I didn't do too well, but being a numbers guy (an old IT guy), zeroes and ones rule my world, and a thing is either one thing or the other, pretty straight forward. So, right on the button.

(22,394 posts)of creativity:
People with different life experiences are going to score very differently on exercises that measure both convergent and divergent thinking, and IMO there's quite a bit of bias in conflating vocabulary with the ability to solve open-ended problems.
Creativity can also mean much more than solving problems. I hope this exercise doesn't make people feel like they're not creative.

(23,147 posts)I got a 78.9, however I do feel that you can do creative things even if you aren't really talented. It's also a skill, I think, and is sharpened with use. So, given my only slightly above average divergence of thinking, guess I'm doing ok.

(25,965 posts)Your score is 85.78, higher than 87.8% of the people who have completed this task
The average score is 78, and most people score between 74 and 82. In our published validation sample, the lowest score was 24 and the highest was 96. The score theoretically ranges from 0 to 200, but scores above 100 are extremely unlikely. In our unpublished online sample, the lowest score we have ever seen is 6 and the highest is 103.

(3,398 posts)I got up to 98.53, higher than 99.89% of people who take the test. I only kept one word from my original list, and that one wasnt high enough on that list to be used the first time. The seven words that count are
Touchdown
Feldspar
Music
Schnitzel
Wormhole
Bookkeeper
Arthritis
It doesnt count psychologically, according to the site, but Im not convinced the first test counted psychologically. It is fun, though.

(14,990 posts)Seems like there are at least two things to keep in mind to get a high score:
1) although you put in ten answers, they only score the first seven valid answers. You really only need seven very different words, but they need to be the first seven.
2) there are lots of nouns which are not physical objects: thoughts/feelings, artistic/scientific concepts, etc.
wryter2000
(46,076 posts)I know a bit about psychological testing, and this appears to be a well-founded test. It doesn't hurt that I did very well.
BTW, horticulture did rather well for me. They need to correlate this with someone's base vocabulary. (Although I have no idea how to calculate that.) My guess is the score depends largely one the number of words one has available easily.
