To pretend that whats happening now is different than Black Lives Matter protests is a fiction, one lawmaker said.TALLAHASSEE Crowds in Florida cities rallying and blocking roadways in support of anti-government protests in Cuba may be putting Gov. Ron DeSantis at odds with a tough new law he championed following last years Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
Large crowds closed Miamis Palmetto Expressway and hundreds demonstrating blocked major streets this week in Orlando, Tampa and across Southwest Florida, leading to a handful of arrests, at least two for battery on law enforcement officers.
DeSantis said he supports the Florida protesters urging an end to the dictatorship in Cuba. And he insists these demonstrations are distinct from those that followed the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.
The people understand the difference between peaceably assembling, which is obviously, peoples constitutional right, and attacking other people or burning down buildings or dragging people out of a car, DeSantis said during a Tuesday roundtable with Cuban-American leaders in Miami.
Theyre much different situations, he said.

So what are the differences again, DeSantis?

(16,789 posts)Are the peaceful protests and blocking traffic over Cuba different from Black Lives Matter? The Spanish brought Africans to the Caribbean as slaves, as did the British. Why are there so many shades of Black throughout that area?
Or is it a government system of treatment towards a people that defies your description of Democracy, whereas the systematic mistreatment of a people within a Democracy is no less important?
Ron DeSantis is showing his racist colors.

(9,108 posts)DeSantis is someone who actually worries me. All of the Trump, none of the idiocy and insanity.
He could be president.

(3,502 posts)But here is an example of a politician supporting a voting block (Cuban Americans) who consistently show up at the polls and whose support generally goes to their party. If and when Democratic voting blocks (African Americans and to some extent women) consistently go to the polls then politicians will listen.
This consistently discrepancy has been the bane of the Democratic party across large areas of the country. Not withstanding efforts to suppress, demoralize and ostracize these groups, it's the biggest obstacle we face. Democrats can't govern if their supporters don't consistently show up (and vote) on election day. It's almost that simple.
