(Guardian UK) Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, a Democrat of Ohio, was one of nine people arrested during a voting rights protest at the Capitol this afternoon.
Beatty, who serves as the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, shared a photo on Twitter of US Capitol police (USCP) officers putting a zip-tie on her and escorting her out of the building.
Let the people vote. Fight for justice, Beatty said in the tweet.

(95,248 posts)I have refused to join in the valorization of the Capitol Police. I understand the political need for it, and do not make much protest.
But this is the sort of thing they train for and join up to do. It's a contemptible bully-boy's job. I have no sympathy for either their casualties or their survivors.
They did the absolute minimum necessary in defense of the country and the Constitution. They did a half-ass job of it, but I will grant that. That much and no more.

(50,987 posts)earnest and who did the best they could do on 1/6. I have to say I DO have sympathy for them.
But it was their OWN higher-ups who put them in that position. They knew what was coming and they understaffed the day. They didn't send help to their OWN members who were under siege. They sent their OWN members out there as cannon fodder. They mismanaged it, apparently on purpose.
And that was Capitol Police too.

(95,248 posts)They are back to normal behavior, and making clear what contemptible creatures they really are once more.
I will not press the matter further, as I understand the political situation.
But I mean what I said.
