PULLMAN, Wash. Washington State University (WSU) Head Football Coach Nick Rolovich says he will not participate on site at next weeks Pac-12 football media day in Los Angeles after choosing not to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
The conference is requiring all in-person participants to be fully vaccinated.
Rolovich tweeted the following statement about his decision:
As the Pac-12 conference has required that all in-person participants at next weeks Pac-12 Football Media Day be fully vaccinated, I will participate remotely and look forward to talking about our football team and the incredible young men in our program. I have elected not to receive a COVID-19 vaccine for reasons which will remain private. While I have made my own decision, I respect that every individual-including our coaches, staff and student-athletes-can make his or her own decision regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. I will not comment further on my decision.
In a statement, WSU Director of Athletics Pat Chun said he and Rolovich have had "multiple conversations" regarding his decision to not receive a COVID-19 vaccine. WSU does have a vaccination requirement, but there are policies and procedures for employees who are not vaccinated to follow.

(7,527 posts)It's his own decision he says but he doesn't even have enough courage to say why he won't get the shot. And I can tell you why. Because his reasons are conspiracy theories and irresponsible "freedumb" bullshit. Yeah, put your players, staff and children you're around in jeopardy but don't have the balls to say why. WSU parents, do you want this guy leading young people?

(7,530 posts)If they won't get the shot, that's the next best option. Likely this is a passive aggressive response that teams will be responsible if a game is cancelled due to COVID.
Maybe they can build "telepresence" bots and sell them to the vaccine hesitant.

(7,527 posts)Locker room talks, player and coaches meetings, face-to-face talks on the field and in practices are required. Can't be done.

(7,530 posts)If an unvaccinated person wants to go to extraordinary measures to keep other people distanced and safe instead of getting the shot and wearing a mask, sounds great.

(1,156 posts)WSU and Pat Chun need to make it clear in no uncertain terms that refusing vaccination is grounds for termination. Rolovich is setting a terrible example and endangering his student athletes and others in the PAC-12 with his ridiculous refusal to get vaccinated. The PAC-12 should suspend him till he either complies or resigns his position.

(5,335 posts)Seriously? If it's a legitimate reason where's the possible harm in stating it? Except that, maybe, "I'm a giant pussy" wouldn't go over so well with WSU fans.

(50,562 posts)If the regents of WSU wont ditch him over his antivax stance, his bad football team should be more than enough to send him packing.
