Let us be very direct and very honest: if we do not have the resources we need to turn out our voters, we could lose this recall, Team Newsom wrote in a plea to donors Wednesday morning, asking for a $3 donation to keep the fight going.
The governors Stop the Republican Recall committee has already raised more than $36 million to combat the effort, but the most recent poll showing an almost even split among likely voters is a cause for concern, the campaign said.
The far-right Republicans are fired up, and everyone else thinks were going to beat this easily and is not motivated to vote, the campaign said in its email.
Also in Newsoms anti-recall arsenal? Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who shot a 30-second ad for the campaign, warning California voters to vote no on the recall.
Will it be enough to motivate Democrats into filling out their recall ballots? Well find out in less than 50 days.

This recall is no joke people. We need to treat this thing like the 2020 election, or any election. GET OUT THE VOTE! And vote no!

(15,036 posts)It's far too easy in this state to recall people for the silliest of reasons, and easier by far for every whack job in the state to declare for the office.
Should have rewritten the recall regs well before Schwarznegger slipped into office. No excuse whatsoever for not doing so in his aftermath.

(3,863 posts)Until Newsome decided to to go to the French Laundry (unmasked and indoors) with a bunch of other politically connected friends in the middle of a pandemic and then lied to us and said it was a small outdoor gathering. That's when this whole thing picked up steam outside of a few right wingers. I have seen a lot of support on social media coming from young women in the beauty industry who were previously apolitical or left leaning. All they saw was their livelihoods being destroyed while he was out partying at one of the most exclusive restaurants in the world. It's hardly the worst thing a politician has done and hardly a reason to recall, but the optics and timing were horrible and 100% completely avoidable. That kind of elitism and hypocrisy is hard to overcome and would likely be impossible anywhere but CA where we thankfully have a healthy majority. I hope it's not enough to do him in, but if it is, we have nobody to blame but him.

(1,351 posts)Serious question, not being argumentative. I thought Newsom pulled his kids out because the camp wasn't following the mask policy. Wouldn't it have been worse for him to leave them in? That would have sent the message that he doesn't mind sending his own kids to a camp that isn't following the mask policy he wants to enforce.
Sympthsical
(9,081 posts)The camp advertised quite clearly and prominently that masks were optional at the camp - in contravention with state mandates. There is almost no way this was unknown in advance. It's literally in the waiver they had to sign.
The Californian parents on my FB are seething. Almost all Democrats, and most of them don't usually post political stuff. It's usually pics of little Henry going fishing. (Note: Henry, you suck at fishing! Friggin six year olds, man).
People were unholy pissed about the French Laundry incident. That had just about receded from memory, and now this. And this close to the recall vote.
It's a totally unnecessary own goal. I won't lie. I'm a little pissed at the stupidity here. This recall shouldn't be even remotely close. And yet, this stuff happens. Le sigh.
crimycarny
(1,351 posts)I didn't realize the camp stated masks were optional when they signed their kids up for camp. It's hard for me to believe Newsom would make the same huge mistake twice. "Own goal" is a perfect description, so unnecessary.

(8,704 posts)It seems to me it's just a excuse to say something bad against a good governor.
Sympthsical
(9,081 posts)He should. It's that he put them in in the first place, when the camp was quite open about flaunting state mask mandates.
Look, I am absolutely voting against the recall. I actually think he's doing a good job as governor in what has been a trying past two years. Not only Covid, but we've been having hellish fire seasons due to climate change. He's been juggling a lot of crises well.
But this whole, "Rules for thee, not for me," behavior by politicians is never a good look. People are bristling under the restrictions and mandates. When our leaders flaunt them, it's the kind of thing that gets your average voter pissed. "Oh, I see. I can't go for a meal or send my kids to certain activities, but it's fine for you?" It gives Republicans and anti-maskers something to hang their hats on. It motivates them.
We don't need these people motivated. We need our people motivated.
The Mouth
(3,156 posts)thing I've seen a politician do in my lifetime.
Yeah, tRump did a bunch of obnoxious stuff, but it was all to play to his base; the French Laundry thing with rich lobbyists (and prevaricating about it) pissed OFF Newsome's base, and - more importantly - the people in the middle who usually don't care.
Hypocrisy pisses people off more than partisanship, I think.
"Let them eat cake".
It's one thing to lose your livelihood in a tragic pandemic, it's something else all together to lose your livelihood and then see the person who closed your business scarfing down a $1200 dinner with a table of fat cats.

Pretty much ALL of my friends are not only Democrats but on the left side of the spectrum.
NO ONE likes Newsome.
"Not a Republican" is about his only selling point. It's good enough, but just another billionaire, with good hair this time, who will do anything to get into or stay in office.
I have no choice but to vote for his smarmy ass, the alternatives are worse, but then I'm pretty left of center, did not have my business closed down and am not in THAT much danger of being hit by wildfires (hello, billions of dollars of surplus and they are GROUNDING the ONLY firefighting 747?).
It's pretty much 'well, at least OUR billionaires aren't racist and have better hair".
TomCADem
(17,390 posts)...waiving Trump and anti-vax signs. No one likes Newsome? Are you sure you are Democrat? Newsome easily won the primary in a Blue State. Smarmy ass? For a Democrat, those are some very Fox News like talking points without pointing to any actual policies or decisions he has made.
The Mouth
(3,156 posts)Chiang , Eastin, and Villaraigosa were much better in my opinion, any of them would have won, too.
The Good Thing is that our Republicans are genuinely crazy, incompetent, and self-destructive here, so no way in hell is one of them winning anything; Ah-nold left a really bad taste in everyone's mouth, but I've never seen TWO 'own-goals' like this before.

(3,156 posts)cutting employee pay by ten percent while running a 76 billion dollar surplus (not counting 25 billion in stimulus). is *NOT* what a 'real' Democrat does; it is however what I would expect a very rich person to do.
When CA employees are get back that pay cut retroactively I might begin to think differently.

(9,081 posts)And he has two things working against him.
1. Republicans are highly motivated.
2. His handling of Covid-19 could've cinched a win easily. Except we're headed into a very uncertain school situation with stressed-out parents. (note: I edited this sentence) It's coming. People will take it out on him.
Mix in yet another unforced French Laundry incident where his kids were unmasked at summer camp - and then his office lied about not knowing.
He has reason to worry. Why he keeps Sideshow Bob rake-walking into these no-mask incidents is beyond me. Did he really think A) no one would find out and B) pretending not to know was the best option?
I just switched my voter registration to mail-in. This could be a mess.

(3,487 posts)closing down salons and gyms again. The reinstatement of the mask mandate is about all they'll be able to do with this spike in COVID. Unless deaths go way up there is no way they can justify another lock down. Yesterday a whopping total of 15 people died in L.A. county from COVID.
Sympthsical
(9,081 posts)I actually don't think one is coming. At least, not like what came before. People are getting panicky. I don't know why I said lockdown, because that's not what I had foremost in my mind while writing that post. I brain farted.
What I think we'll have to watch is the resumption of school and how the state and districts handle it.
That issue gets all kinds of people riled up.
beaglelover
(3,487 posts)Schools are definitely going to reopen in a few weeks, but in the L.A. unified school district, they are giving an option of remote learning. We will see in a few weeks how many parents take that option versus sending their children to school. I live across from an elementary school so I should be able to tell pretty quickly if the kids are back at school in person.

He said that what he's seeing at his hospital is getting very worry some. He doesn't think there will be another lock down and he also doesn't think that we will get to that point. But he also said that what happens in the next few weeks almost entirely depends on how many people get vaccinated. He's in public health, BTW.
So we need to get out the vax as much as we need to get out the vote!

Oh and by the way your friend pocketed $ 10 million in lobbying fees representing companies doing business with the state government. Oh and among Kinney's clients at the party? An oil CEO who heading the campaign yo overturn the fracking ban and spending millions to do it.
I dont think dems will be voting for a recall. Im worried they sit on their hands and dont vote at all because of his unforced errors which played terribly here. Then we have the motivated minority electing a new governor.
